That 178 road is a doozy ....

Keep following it east: and turn left at Kernville: follow the road to the Tubs (Alder Creek) .....

Used to be my favorite 'High School' party camp ....

Oh yeah ... earthquake ...

13. Yup. A 5.0 near Keene, CA ... just enough to test a pacemaker.

I tend to think this is not unrelated to Mt. St. Helens. The eastern Pacific Rim is restless.

6. Mt. St. Helens Volcano Advisory
<http://www.kirotv.com/news/3766950/detail.html>

MOUNT ST. HELENS, Wash. -- Geologists have raised the alert level at Mount Saint Helens to a "volcano advisory," the second highest warning of a possible eruption.

Geologists said activity at Mount Saint Helens is "ramping up" and they are more convinced now that magma is moving under the volcano. They expected an eruption would be limited to within three miles of the volcano.

"We think the likelihood of an eruption has increased," said

Scientist told a news conference at the U.S. Geological Survey's Cascade Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, Wash., that small earthquakes are now occurring at the rate of four a minute.

9. The earthquake epicenter was a few miles from my house!
Edited on Wed Sep-29-04 06:24 PM by Mountainman
A moderate earthquake occurred at 3:54:53 PM (PDT) on Wednesday, September 29, 2004.
The magnitude 5.0 event occurred 17 km (11 miles) NNW of Keene, CA.
The hypocentral depth is 1 km ( 1 mile).

I live on a road that winds though a canyon and large granite rocks fall off the mountain sides. It will be real interesting going home tonight. Also I have to cross the railroad line going to Tehachapi loop twice, I hope there were no derailments.

16. Yup. Followed by a 4.5 only 2 minutes later.
There's a significant tectonic shift taking place on the eastern Pacific Rim.

18. I think so, in a plate tectonics way.
It'd be interesting to see if they've noted any accelerated shift rate at the station north of Parkfield.

23. When I look around southern Arizona ..
... all I see is dry ocean bottom. Honestly, you might be amazed at how closely the topology resembles ocean bottom, particularly at the same latitude. (Yes, I'm a scuba diver.)

Thus, I'd not be too sanguine that a tectonic event sufficient to immerse parts of entire states wouldn't make a new "Gulf of Arizona."

27. My parents say yes.
They won't even put Kerry stickers on their cars.

Hell, I was proud to have Mondale ones on mine in 1984 when I lived there.

I was even on the news while I was working on the campagn. It was funny, cuz the guy running the HQ said he got complants about me when some asshole saw me and my friends posting Mondale/Ferraro signs all the way down Stockdale Highway to Cal State Bakersfield.
