The DOW closed today DOWN at 6.66 (really)

Why do I have this creepy feeling that right wing fundies will jump all over this data like it was some kind of OMEN regarding the Removal of the Ten Commandments Monument??

1. Heck, if it was down 6.68 they could claim it was the
Neighbor of the Beast.

If it was down 3.33 they could call it The Beast Lite, half the calories but all the great taste!

3. Actually...
Most Biblical scholars agree that "666" is a mistranslation, and that the mark of the Beast is actually 616. Doesn't quite have the same ring to it, does it?

5. Is it anywhere near Crawford Texas?
Seriously though....

The KJV actually reads "Six Hundred, Threescore, and Six. A "score" is twenty, so a threescore, or 3 x 20, would be sixty (60).

Where did they get 616?

9. Scholarship
I'm not a theologian by training, but my understanding is that the most reliable ancient manuscripts render it 616. There's a lot of speculation that that was "code" for Nero.

The KJV didn't rely on the ancient texts, many of which hadn't even been discovered at the time it was prepared. The KJV is notorious for its many textual mistakes, including a reference to "Easter" when it meant "Passover"!

My understanding is that when the KJV was being prepared, all of the New Testament "Jacobs" were changed to "James"es as a way of kissing up to the benefactor of the project. No modern version of which I'm aware has fixed that, although most (including my beloved New Revised Standard Version) footnote references to James as "or, Jacob."

20. Speaking of the Book of Revelations
I read an article (written by a Catholic priest) which suggests Revelations was indeed written as a coded message of comfort and support to the Christians of Nero's time. To me it's as good an explanation as any; I've read Revelations and I defy anyone to make head nor tail of that thing.

When I was in my teens I went with a group of people to see "The Omen." We went out for pizza afterwards and the bill came out to $6.66. A coincidence, of course, but you've got to admit, a spooky coincidence.

12. Reminds me of a 7-11 I worked in during the early 90's
For a brief time, the price of some common combination of beer and smokes would come to exactly $6.66. I'm pretty sure it was a 6-pack of Bud and Marlboros.... Anyway, we had a few customers who were so freaked out by it that they insisted on separate transactions. They would just conveniently forget they needed the cigs until after they bought the beer, or vice versa.

Puh-leeeze!!! :eyes:

16. Loan Account Number
I used to have a survival job in a big corrupt corporate bank auditing loan applications. Some bible thumper wanted her account number changed because it had "...666..." in it. She was calling every day. They eventually did, though we working proles thought it ought to stay.

18. I saw a fundie pamplet that showed three sixes
in the middle of a 20-digit number on a Sears invoice as evidence that the beast is on his way. I wonder if fundie companies have software that rejects invoices with three consecutive sixes!
