Can we get rid of Fox News after we win the election?

Seriously, we need laws that place stringent requirements on what can be labeled as "news". Same thing for truth in advertising ala the "Fair and Balanced" label.

A lawsuit against Fox, I believe it was in Florida, actually sided with Fox and said that news does not have to be truthful. They can say anything they want and call it news.

2. Get rid of Fox
Yeah, it would be nice if they had to admit their allegiance to the Republican party. Although anyone with any brains should be able to see that they are biased.

3. There needs to be some accountability
We need to do something about bringing back the Fairness Doctrine - or something very much like it - it would be a step in the right direction.

4. Write the Kerry campaign and...
... suggest that they make it a priority to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine. That's a good start to making Fox truly "fair and balanced."

As for the Florida Fox story, it related to a producer/reporter team doing a story on BGH (bovine growth hormone) and issues over reportorial control and unfair dismissal. A lower court found for the producer, but the ruling was overturned by an appeal court. The details of the suit can be found in Into the Buzzsaw.

Cheers.

6. Jeez it's great to see the first amendment defended.
Yes, let ME decide what should and should not be said on the airwaves or printed in the papers.
Come on, you're talking about censorship.
The truth will set you free......It's just that we ALL have a personal perception of what the truth is.

7. Not true.
A personal perception of what the truth is?

Okay, my perception is that the world is flat. That is MY truth.

If we reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, which was dumped by Reagan, both sides have to get equal time. That is the way it used to be, before Reagan.

That is the way it should be, which is also my perception of truth.

Censorship my ass.

8. Should AAR have to give equal time to pukes?
I like being able to listen to commentary with my own biases fully in place.

12. not enough
Fairness Doctrine is good but not enough.

We need legislation that requires any program that calls itself "news" to be truthful. Anything that is editorial should have EDITORIAL stamped on it in big letters and it should not be able to be aired as part of a news broadcast.

Currently there is no law requiring news broadcasts to be fair or truthful.

14. no foreign owners: no nazis
Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 04:25 AM by oscar111
this is a bit far from traditional usa custom, but it is interesting to mull over the fact that the dutch/holland, "have no problem with banning nazi propoganda".
Note, that many starved in holland during WW2, not sure why more there than other places, but that is what i read.

Note that we right now have 12 million hungry, and our 3 million homeless die at three times the normal rate. Both due to the ideas sent out by RW media today. Not due to dem media, such as AA.
RW ideas kill, the Dem ideas do not. Big difference, when you look at reality clearly.

Could be relevant to both the replies above about fox, and also to why AA would not need to give equal time to republicans.

Fox is Australian owned, right? Ban foreign ownership of usa media, and Murdoch's tears of loss fall in his Aussie beer. So sad. LOL.
