4. Let me try...
:eyes:

It probably means, and I am guessing from the crap I hear them spew, that, as liberals and "socialists" who want universal healthcare, we will be taxed heavily for it, thus, our taxes will go up, and it will be just like the commie state that we pinkoes all want.

God, they are pathetic.

5. I can..I argued with someone who said if health is free, people
will fill up hospital waiting rooms even when they are not sick..this is the sort of thinking that's goes with the horroe of free medecine..like you would have time from your pittance pay Walmart job to hang around a hospital all day

6. I've got free health care
(OK, so it costs me about $60 a month for full coverage including dental (50-80%), drug plan (80%) and medical).

The hospital waiting rooms are fairly quiet because routine stuff gets taken care of by medical clinics instead of people coming to emerg for free service.

7. My father is afraid of universal health care--
because he thinks that older folks like him will be put on lower priority.

He claims to know an elderly woman in Canada that was put on a months long waiting list for a hip transplant--and that by the time they got to her--she was inoperable--and confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

I think this may be a RW scare story that is being spread around to scare elderly voters (?) has anyone else heard smear stories against universal health coverage?

8. Has he introduced you to the poor Canadian lady?
Does he have her phone number or any specific information?

Quite a few smear stories have shown up at DU. Eventually, a Canadian happens into the thread and sets things straight.

14. He claims to know her through his church---
and that she is related to people who I have met before.

Personally--I think my father believes this story hook line and sinker--but I believe it is an urban legend type of scare story that has been circulated through his church to scare people.

I do not attend this church--or even live in the same city as my father--so I am not up on all the ins and outs--it just seems like a scare tactic to me. However--I think it is a very successful scare tactic--because several of his friends seem to be "afraid" of universal health care as well.

I don't need a "Canadian to debunk this for me" I have lived in the British Isles--where we had fantastic health care. But--he insists that the situation is different when you are old--and that no one cares as much about you when you are old.

I don't really know how to combat this--

18. Not Like with those Wonderful HMO's
They NEVER deny or delay service for anyone, right?

We're so much better having profit-minded insurance company bean counters make our medical decisions for us, aren't we?

As for the way we treat older folks--has your father been following the big medicare scam that our Republican government just foisted on America? Yep, we really take care of our elderly here in the U.S.

20. hey--you are preaching to the choir--
I am a strong advocate of Universal Health Coverage.

But--it is obvious that these things are being spread around to scare old people.

And in his case (he is a lifelong Democrat and has been an activist ever since he campaigned for McGovern) the fear tactics have worked.

BTW--he has an HMO and has a wonderful plan, great coverage and doctors that he loves. He has double hip replacements and he has had to undergo multiple surgeries for complications (the replacements are old--they were originally put in over 20 years ago--and his severe arthritis one of many complicating factors).

He has been very very fortunate with his health care--it has always been fantastic. So of course it worries him to imagine replacing it with something that might not be as good.

I can understand his fears--and I certainly am not going to attack him on this. If I were elderly--I may be easily manipulated too. Have some compassion.

wait until you have a wide-scale tuberculosis outbreak because we wouldn't shell out to immunize immigrant children."

Not exactly pithy bumper-sticker fodder, but the straightforward truth.

13. It's a slam on Universal Healthcare
i.e. when it's free (universal, socialized, whatever you choose to call it) it will be infinitely worse than it is now.

Possible, certainly, but considering how it's trending now, that might soon change, if it hasn't already.

17. Nobody said it was going to be free
and it's never going to be - it's just a question of who pays for it. Costs might change when there's a different payer plan, but it won't be free.

19. Who pays . . .
And who is paid.

Doesn't a huge chunk of our medical expenses in this country go to insurance companies and their stockholders?

Those are the people who would lose out if we got some sort of government financed system. And that's why they fought Hillary tooth and nail.

23. Nothing is life is free and neither would universal health care.
It would however make us more competative on the global market if the government was the agency collecting and dispersing the money.
