Poll question: Which party would you vote for in 2004...
Edited on Fri Aug-22-03 01:28 PM by goobergunch
...if the Congressional election were done by proportional representation?

Here, I'm assuming that each of the two major parties will split, so there will probably be the viable parties listed herein.

5. The subject line was incorrect...
These are factions and philosophies, not related to parties.

7. Populists are not socially conservative
At least, they don't have to be. During the populist movement early this century, they were pretty socially conservative, but that's because most Americans were. I would think a new Populist party would represent the values that most Americans have, which is pretty tolerant in my opinion.

10. hey this is America!
In America, socialism means "evil"! Besides, I like public ownership to be out of the hands of the government anyway - I'll take unions - credit unions, labor unions that own their shops, and community unions that own their own community. We really don't need to government involved at all :)

11. Progressive Dems
I agree with much that the Greens believe in, but I have to vote for a party that has a shot at winning.

16. The poll is about who you would vote for if there was proportional
representation, so you wouldn't have to worry about the Greens not getting the majority, they would get an amount of seats proportional to how many votes they get.

14. I definitely disagree with your definition of populist
Howard Dean is a populist
John McCain is a populist
Ralph Nader is a populist
Dennis Kucinich is a populist

15. Would you define "populist" please?
I learned in pol-sci classes that populist meant a person who formed his opinions according to the people's opinions, rather than had his own political views. All politicians are populists to a degree, but some like Clinton are more populistic than others like Bush.

17. Populists
Populists defend the interests of the little guy (and gal) against the entrenched elites.
