If the people of California elect Schwartzenegger, they deserve him
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/21/national/21ARNO.html?hp

...Mr. Schwarzenegger said he would not provide specifics on budget cuts during the campaign. "The public doesn't care about figures," he said.

"What the people want to hear is, are you willing to make the changes. Are you tough enough to go in there and provide leadership. "

The actor, who has drawn the ire of his party's conservative base because of his moderate stance on social issues, made clear that when it comes to economics he is philosophically opposed to tax increases. Still, he said he would not commit to the kind of "no new taxes" pledge that haunted his mentor and friend, the former President George Bush.

In a town hall-style meeting tonight at a Los Angeles television studio, Governor Gray Davis said it might be necessary to raise taxes to preserve state programs.

"It's fun for Arnold to say `no new taxes,' " Mr. Davis said. "You just ask him, `Where are the cuts?' "

In his appearance, Mr. Schwarzenegger said, "I feel the people of California have been punished enough. From the time they get up in the morning and flush the toilet they're taxed. When they go get a coffee they're taxed. When they get in their car they're taxed. When they go to the gas station they're taxed. When they go to lunch they're taxed. This goes on all day long. Tax. Tax. Tax. Tax. Tax."

Ah-nold is just going to keep bluffing his way to election day, without providing any hard numbers, and it's going to work- because:

"The public doesn't care about figures..."

1. I saw that joke on TV touting himself
and his inability to provide hard answers to questions.

So, if he gets in , he will cut what always gets cut: services.

Yup, they deserve him if they vote for him.

4. Well, to be fair
I don't know how any governor can fail to cut some services, all things considered. But it needs to be part of a program that also involves increasing revenues through taxes.

2. But with so many candidates he might win with relatively few votes
Most Californians can vote for other candidiates and still end up with Arnold - doesn't sound fair to me.

3. But WE don't deserve him!
He'll be all over the tv and magazines if Californians are dumb enough to vote him in. What is it with the Republican's wanting dimwit puppets to represent them? Oh...never mind.

Then again, what am I saying? Orrin Hatch is the representative from my state, and the rest of the country certainly doesn't deserve this atrocity.

5. So if 11-15% go ape shit crazy & vote for Mr. Mom they ALL deserve it?
Not in my estimation.

This whole recall effort smacks of a coup IMHO. As usual when the repukes lose an election straight up they immeduiately turn to the courts and archaic laws.

8. I live in California, and I agree with the top of this thread
The recall is WRONG. Any of the repukes running is WRONG. But, if the Democrats stay home this election, they deserve whatever result plagues them. There are more Democrats than repukes in this state. Defeating the recall should be easy. It requires nothing more than going to the polls. This is a classic example of the saying: All evil needs to triumph is for good men to remain silent.
Lincoln said "God must so love the poor, He created so many of them." There are more poor than rich, even in the Golden State. If they can not see the stakes in the latest repuklican election theft, they deserve their misery.

7. I have not even seen an entire ...
Ad yet, and I am already tired of (and completely annoyed by) the the way he says California. He makes it sound like some bizzare vegetable related to the Califlower.

"The public doesn't care about figures..."

This is why he will not be the next Governor of California.

The people are recalling Davis because of the fiscal crisis. I'm sure most people think that this is because the public does not know the "figures". This is what people want to change. If he thinks he can win with this "tough guy" image ("What the people want to hear is, are you willing to make the changes. Are you tough enough to go in there and provide leadership"), he is full of shit.

I'm not convinced that a person with his personal wealth can to be able to have the public's best interest in mind.

Cheers
Drifter
