Neo-cons; Gestapo...frightening similarities.
"I must warn you most solemnly that this sinister individual will lead our country into the abyss and our nation to an unprecedented catastrophe. Future generations will curse you in your tomb for having allowed this"
-General Ludendorff, 1923, in a letter to Hindenburg, expressing his concerns about his former friend, Hitler.

I'm reading a book about the evolution and history of the Gestapo, wrtitten in 1964 by Jacques Delarue. And let me tell you it is scaring the hell out of me. How the Nazis were able to seize power-the firing of the reichstag, which they would not allow to be properly investigated, and allowed the Nazis to foment public opinion in their favor. Allowing the nazis to issue "emergency decrees", which stifled political opposistion long enough for the Nazis to get in posistion to silence it's critics more effectively. (i.e. kill 'em)
The timidity of the opposistion; allowing the Nazis to supplant all democratic institutions. It's shocking how many warnings the people had, but failed to act upon. Not only in Germany, but all over the world.
I've only completed a third of the book, and I am poleaxed by how many time I could replace "Goering" with "cheney" or "ashcroft"..."Communist" with "terrorist".
Secret arrests. Secret trials with manufactured evidence. Laws adversely affecting the freedom of the press. Suspension of federal labor unions. Laws advantageous to the industrialists. And on, and on.

So far, the creation of the Nazi dictatorship is almost parallel to what is happening in our country today.
How much further down the road will we follow the history of the Nazi party? We already have our first concentration camp. Will we soon have special "Homeland Security Police"? Will they wear brown shirts?
I keep trying to tell myself, "No, not here. With the internet and all, this sort of thing could not happen here. Could it?"
Then I remember all those WW2 shows I watched with my dad as a child. I remember how regular Germans were practically in shock when they realized what they had done.
Will we, as a nation do the same? Will we not see the true danger until it is far to late?
Pray for us.

1. Sorry, you messed up the dates
1923 was the year of Hitler's failed putsch; Luttendorf participated in that one.
BTW Ebert(SPD), not Hindenburg was President in 1923.

The letter you're mentioning was written in 1933 - too late.

Sorry to flame you.

3. If the old DU was available for searching
you would find many threads about this. It seemed to be a very prevalent topic about a month ago, & then died down somewhat. I think people exhausted everything they had to say on the subject.

This part of your post struck me: "I remember how regular Germans were practically in shock when they realized what they had done.
Will we, as a nation do the same? Will we not see the true danger until it is far to late?" The majority of the German people didn't seem to care until they realized they were losing the war & they could hear the Allied guns in the distance.
