The Stepford Wives: A metaphor for our times?
A town of perfect, obedient robots. Elimination of caring, sacrifice and free will. You can either join the club or get out of this perfect little Connecticut town.

Its ok to have one token Jewish couple - and don't let them ever forget they're different. Celebrate the fourth but don't overheat those implanted chips. No dissent allowed. Only perfect obedience.

Just send these robotic, programmed wives shopping every day.

Very rich. Very Republican. Very evil.

1. Gee
You think they meant it to be allegorical?

There's a thesis in there, somewhere.

5. The original, far better film was made in 1975...
and Ira Levin's book was written in 1972. So perhaps it's a metaphor for the past 30+ years?

9. "Wackadoo Wing" that's hilarious...who said that?
I haven't seen the new movie, just clips and they looked very odd...is it a comedy? I really liked how Katherine Ross was an artist (photographer) who was very independent. When I see how much make-up and the torture shoes and ridiculous under 90 lb bodies these grown women like Nicole Kidman do to themselves in real life...

well, they don't seem all that Independent.

11. "Wackadoo Wing" was coined by Maureen Dowd in a NY Times article
in which she lumped Gore and Dean into the "Wackadoo Wing of the Democratic Party"; she seems to think their passion about this country is less than sane — I think it's absolutely necessary.

Yes, the new version of The Stepford Wives is done as a comedy — the original was a horror film (Levin also wrote Rosemary's Baby).

6. a metaphor for 1950's cleaver family america.
to try and say that it is a metaphor for our times is a little silly, what with the sexual revolution, and women's lib movements that have gained prominence since then.

10. Not meant as metaphor for women
I don't think that this necessarily applies as a metaphor distinctly for women.....

It is what we should rise up in our chairs about. It has been the plan to dumb down Americans, our children with TV, music, & yes even recreational drugs (surprise I said that!) while their totally evil plan evolves around us....

We have become so accustomed to maintaining our lifestyles we don't notice what has really been going on in the world, nor have we really cared for some 25 -30 years now......

My avatar is Max Headroom for a reason, anybody remember the premise of the show??? They really told us what was coming in many of the movies & shows that have been produced in the late 70's thru now, had anybody been listening.....Of course there were the shows that most were involved with the mind numbing shows like Mork & Mindy (yeah, I like Robin Williams too)all the really just stupid comedy shit...remember??

8. the softer, gentler face of discrimination ...
I loved the scene where the Stepford guys are falling over themselves to show how they aren't racist or homophobic -- yet as TruthIsAll pointed out, it's all about tokenism. As long as the individuals in question aren't TOO different, they're accepted -- like the gay Republican character. The little elephant brooch on Glenn Close was a neat reminder.

12. you're missing the bigger metaphor here ...
It devolved from the original film in which the misogynistic threat was a ominous presence into this in which the ominous has become comedic ...
