What's up with that? Geffen is about the wealthiest liberal in show business, Katzenberg HATES Disney, and Speilberg is about as liberal as they come in Hollywood!! On top of all that - IT'S GOING TO MAKE SOMEONE A FORTUNE!! Seems like a natural fit for Dreamworks. Has anyone read anywhere that this might be in the works? If it isn't, perhaps someone should start a movement, actually suggesting them to do so (though I can't for the life of me, understand why we'd have to!)!

1. Don't put the cart before the horse
Give the Weinsteins a chance to buy the film from Disney first.

Then they can concentrate on finding a distributor.

And from all indications, finding a distributor will not be a problem for them.

7. I heard that Disney is refusing to sell the rights to the Weinsteins.
If true (and I sure as hell hope it isn't) Disney would be setting itself up for a huge law suit from Moore and/or the Weinsteins. Refusing to distribute is one thing - but denying Moore the ability to go elsewhere - he could take them to the cleaners over that - and I doubt the board is going to want to see Disney really whalloped just to defend a failing, poll nose diving War Chimp!

16. There is an agreement to sell the rights to the Weinsteins...
they cannot use Miramax to distribute it.

Disney strikes Moore movie deal

Harvey Weinstein is co-founder of Miramax films
Miramax chiefs Harvey and Bob Weinstein will distribute satirist Michael Moore's film Fahrenheit 9/11, despite an earlier ban by backers Disney.

18. Weinsteing must go outside of Miramax.
Ought to be tons of places to go. Anyone bigger than Dreamworks to distribute? Let's just hope they move quickly - and pounce on Bushler & Co. while they're still in a freefall in the polls!!

21. Yep!
If I were the Weinsteins, I would hold off announcing a distributor for a bit, wait till the furor over the win in Cannes to die down then announce it. It would cause another flurry of PR again.

29. Here's a perfect strategy...
A July 4th announcement and in the theaters by August 15th.

Hit them on America's most important holiday, and get it in the theaters just before the GOP convention in September.

28. OH HELL YES!
Distributors will be beating down Weinstein's door to get this film in the theaters before the election.

Any guesses on how much it'll make?

I'll go out on a limb and say the $50 million range.

9. They probably are fighting off a massive influx of distributors
It's a sure fire hit, distribution companies are probably begging to work with the Weinsteins. Choose wisely my friends, preferable the distributor that offers the best marketing/advertising package.

The biggest benefit of the Cannes award is that the marketing will be more aggressive than for BFC. It's going to be hard for the Repuke base to ignore this film in a few weeks.

11. That's what the dailies are saying
Hollywood insiders are saying this will make more money than Bowling for Columbine, which is the biggest selling documentary in history.

17. Right ...

Disney is in financial problems. They're trying to throw away their cake and eat it too.

They'll drive a hard bargain on this and make as much money as they would distributing it themselves.

BTW, I can't wait for the age of digital cinema. Distribution will become irrelevant. It's a simple matter of downloading the film. Current distribution requires film prints that cost at least $5,000 per copy.

Digital cinema will be a rennaisance for smaller film projects. The investment in distribution will become irrelavent. The film could be shown in a few theatres to start. Than a smash could be instantly distributed across the country to as many theatres as possible.

The mini-plex small theatres will also benefit. They will be able to show more films on fewer screens and change films on a day to day basis based on demand.

Of course, if they refuse to distribute this. Moore could go wildcat and decide to go directly to DVD. If Disney balks, he could just MPEG-4 it up and distribute it via peer-to-peer.

If that becomes a real possibility, Disney may back down because they would likely to recover their investment.

I think we will see a film about the making of Fahrenheit 9/11 at some point. It's story really is similar to the making of "Citizen Cane" and the subsequent effort to destroy the film by media mogul William Randolph Hearst.

I tried to check out michealmoore.com for any more details on the distribution crisis, but the site is not responding. Anyone else having that problem?

I'll leave it up to the pros. At this point I cant see the movie not getting out.

12. There is - over the Oscars. But, f*ck - wouldn't ya think saving humanity
From the rise of a blood thirsty fascist war machine might be JUST A LITTLE MORE IMPORTANT!!! From what I've read - widespread distribution of this movie in theaters and for rental will sink Bushler and his Bush Crime Administration for good!

I woulnd't know for sure of course but I would think that Miramax has the luxury of taking its time with this.

13. Miramax may have that luxury - but WE certainly don't!
Besides - the film will make TONS more BEFORE the election! Just as Gibson's movie did before Easter.

Did you read something somewhere that he is supporting it? I'm not trying to flame, I'd just be interested in seeing some evidence that links him to a pro-war stance.

27. thanks
Because supporting an extreme right wing Christian fundy doesn't seem very Spielbergy. And I really don't think that Bush's policy on Israel would be enough for Spielberg to overlook all the other bad stuff Bush has done.

30. Um, in case you haven't noticed:
There is an unholy alliance between extreme RW fundies and Likudnicks over their Jesus returning to Israel to rule the earth thingy and Israeli's taking advantage of that for the funding by the u.s. government to Israel.

Also, some see conquering Iraq as helping to protect Israel.

Obviously, its not universal, but there are quite a number on both sides of that equation who think that way
