Bush: ‘Natural’ Alliance Of U.S. And Israel Unbreakable

To thunderous applause, chants of “four more years,” and at least two dozen standing ovations, President Bush on Tuesday addressed the closing session of the annual policy conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

The crowd of about 5,000 – which included hundreds of students – was in a distinctly pro-Bush frame of mind even before the president made his appearance at the Washington Convention Center.

The very mention of Bush’s name or the sight of his image on video screens was enough to prompt sustained cheers. When Rep. Tom DeLay, the Republican leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, called Bush “the greatest friend of Israel the world has ever had,” he got a standing ovation.

In his speech, Bush declared, “Our nation and the nation of Israel have much in common. We’re both relatively young nations, born of struggle and sacrifice. We’re both founded by immigrants escaping religious persecution in other lands.

“We have both built vibrant democracies, built on the rule of law.... These ties have made us natural allies, and these ties will never be broken.”

Bush spoke of how the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the U.S. had further bonded the two countries.

“The Israeli people have always had enemies at their borders and terrorists close at hand,” said Bush. “Again and again, Israel has defended itself with skill and heroism.... On September 11, 2001, Americans saw that we are no longer protected by geography from the dangers of the world. We experienced the horror of being attacked in our homeland, on our streets, and in places of work.

“And from that experience came an even stronger determination, a fierce determination to defeat terrorism and to eliminate the threat it poses to free people everywhere.”

1. Yea, Bush & Sharon should both retire to Crawford.
I don't agree with the US being Israel's best friend, but I think Bush is Sharon's best friend. Both of them seem intent on violence and hatred!

5. Um, aren't those folks usually big Bush supporters
Seems this unholy alliance among fundies and militant Jews is creating all kinds of strange bedfellows.

6. I think..
I think US definitely should have relations of mutual interest with Israel but not if this means some Israeli leaders with minds of their own fueling the fire of violence that both sides really are to blame further and further.. Listen - Arafat is not Mother Theresa and there are obviously security concern Israel must address - but there comes a point when you say enough is enough.. Israel should be the better man in this case.. Put up with the attacks and let the world know you are refraining from attacking and then put the ball in the Palestinian court and say listen "We're not retaliating, we're not bulldozing homes, we're not doing this and that - lets sit down at the table and fix this freaking mess."

Ahh - it's disturbing.. well good luck to you all in your endeavors and it's good to be here at DU!
