GOP != "Party of Lincoln"
I was thinking about this Repig trumpeting point, and I decided it was a complete and utter fallacy. What they don't realize (or refuse to realize) was that Lincoln shared many of the same beliefs progressives like us do.

"The Good Lord must have loved the common people. He made so many of them."

They may be the "Party of Lincoln," but we're the "Party of Lincoln's Ideals."

4. If Lincoln had today's Gopper values
would he have signed the Emancipation Proclamation. I seriously doubt it.

8. Emancipation Proclamation was BS
It only applied to states in the areas still rebelling, and it didn't apply to the border slave-states that remained in the Union, or the areas that were already retaken by Union forces. It was only political and meant basically nothing.

15. Funny you say that
It did lead to freeing the slaves. Arming them and putting them in the war. And that led to complete freedom.

Too bad they AREN'T the GOP of Lincoln.

5. Ideologies began to shift in the time between the two Roosevelts.
The Repukes became big-business oriented bigots and the Democrats became the party of tolerance and inclusiveness.

9. Dems v Repigs
Actually I believe the shift in Democrats and Repigs occurred with the whole civil rights movement, when Democrats, who were prevalent in the South and West supported the efforts while Repigs opposed it. Naturally, the biggots in these areas shifted parties and the south and such became republican strongholds (evidenced by their voting heavily repigs every election).

Change their hatred and maybe we can bring them back to the party of the people, not the party of the executive.

7. Mr Lincoln was NOT a Republican his second term. . .
To unite his Republican party, which advocated abolition of slavery, with those northern Democrats who supported Mr. Lincoln and the War (War Democrats), as well as to emphasize the preservation of the Union above all by merging all who supported him under a single banner, Abraham Lincoln changed the name of his party in the summer of 1864 from Republican to National Union. His running mate, Andrew Johnson, was a War Democrat. Despite a dark, bloody summer of increasingly unlikely chances of winning in the November General Election, a series of dramatic war victories in September and October reversed the trend and the Union party carried the election.

10. Simple Answer!
The republican and democratic parties have basically switched roles since that time.

All you have to do is go back to the mid 1800s, which is when the republican party was founded, and you can follow politics from then until now to see the transformation.

In the mid 1800s the south was virtually all democratic, while the northern regions readily embraced the new republican party.

Note todays demographics as compared to Lincoln's time. Completely reversed. The ideals of each party switched too.

True Story!

11. Lincoln shmincoln...
they're the party of Teddy Roosevelt, the last progressive Republican.

Oh, they love to forget Roosevelt, and how he bolted the party because he thought they were getting too cozy with big business and no longer had any use for his trustbusting and regulation.

Or honest government.

They never mention Eisenhower, either-- the only actual war hero they ever had, but who warned us against militarism. A real soldier, who knew all too well the true costs of war.

Oh, to see Shrub, DeLay, and the rest of the chickenhawks lick his boots.
