I was thinking about this Repig trumpeting point, and I decided it was a complete and utter fallacy. What they don't realize (or refuse to realize) was that Lincoln shared many of the same beliefs progressives like us do.

"The Good Lord must have loved the common people. He made so many of them."

They may be the "Party of Lincoln," but we're the "Party of Lincoln's Ideals."

It only applied to states in the areas still rebelling, and it didn't apply to the border slave-states that remained in the Union, or the areas that were already retaken by Union forces. It was only political and meant basically nothing.

9. Dems v Repigs

Actually I believe the shift in Democrats and Repigs occurred with the whole civil rights movement, when Democrats, who were prevalent in the South and West supported the efforts while Repigs opposed it. Naturally, the biggots in these areas shifted parties and the south and such became republican strongholds (evidenced by their voting heavily repigs every election).

Change their hatred and maybe we can bring them back to the party of the people, not the party of the executive.

His running mate, Andrew Johnson, was a War Democrat. 10. Simple Answer!

The republican and democratic parties have basically switched roles since that time.

All you have to do is go back to the mid 1800s, which is when the republican party was founded, and you can follow politics from then until now to see the transformation.

In the mid 1800s the south was virtually all democratic, while the northern regions readily embraced the new republican party.

Note todays demographics as compared to Lincoln's time. Completely reversed. The ideals of each party switched too.
