1. uh... how?
so the Irish rightly don't want Bush to come to Ireland (I'd prefer it if he were in Guam instead of the mainland of America) and some Australians are desecrating our flag.

How are we fucked?

2. I think in the sense of international opinion
(Welcome Ms Mag!)

I don't want to answer for the poster, but if Australians are burning our flag, (they have always loved Yanks!), we are hitting rock bottom in the court of world opinion.

8. Didn't like 70% of the Australian population disagree with this war?
I know their more intelligent legislators dislike Bush intensely. Since that farce of an election in 2000 our international standing has dropped like the Sacramento Kings during the NBA Playoffs.

20. I think many Australians know that most Americans hate Bush as much as
they do. I don't think their hatred is aimed at the American people, per se. I think they hate Bush and Howard for going into this slaughter in their name. I think also that Canadiens may think the same. They , as well as the Aussie, are wonderful, welcoming people.

13. They have always been our Allies
and among our oldest Best Friends

Damn, those are among the very few other-continent countries that Americans could safely visit or vacation to!

Who woulda thought true Isolationism would be literally forced upon us rather than something political we decide to do in respect to other countries?

If you can't see how this makes us truly F'ed... then I'm afraid I cannot explain it further to you.

42. Excuse me...
...but I never once tried to censor you, so get your facts right before you attack someone.

Now, I happen to hail from one of the countries you have put down in this thread by saying that now the people of these countries hate the peple of America. That is SIMPLY NOT TRUE! You want to slam a country? Slam it for something that is factual, not something that you have seen from a picture posted in a thread, with an Aussie burning a U.S. flag as a protest sign against the IRAQ WAR!

I AM, I AM!

Canada dislikes us for many reasons beyond this war (environmental for one!); Mexico dislikes us (and it didn't help that the RW pundits trashed it for refusing to join the "Coalition" even though they did it for their own moral compunction!)
South America? Cuba? Pfft - they can't stand us either.
Even Puerto Rico has always had a large anti-US faction...

And yes I completely agree MANY other reasons... but pretty soon it's gonna be literally US against the entire world!

People don't like bullies, and they band together against them...
so I still say we are royally f'ed. And it's still something I get upset over.
Sorry.

5. We? No, no...
Him. The Shrub is really and truly screwed.

A friend of mine just got back from Ireland about a month ago. He'd had the trip planned for over a year but was starting to get a little leery of going from fear of "hatred of Americans." But he decided to go anyway.

Everywhere he went, he was asked about the Shrub, the war, and what his personal views were. All he had to say was, "I'm not voting for that SOB" and the drinks started flowing.

The Irish, Australians, etc. don't hate "us." They hate our leader and everything he stands for. By extension, they hate those that support him.

Now should some travesty befall us this November that puts the Shrub back in the WH, all bets are off. The coming election in foreign eyes will be a referendum on our worth.

44. Yeah, but I really think that now
the people that hate us, hate us for our government (this misadministration, I should say) and not for our freedoms. Most people in the world know the difference between the people of the United States and the assholes that run the United States. Remember, the rest of the world knows that this President wasn't elected, even if some in this country are still in denial about it. The rest of the world knows that the election was stolen.

11. The visit to Ireland is part of the tradtional
Edited on Sat May-22-04 05:02 PM by qwertyMike
election year Three-"I"'s Presidential tour.
Ireland, Israel, Italy - for the voters back home.

Every President has managed to trace some Irish roots and the locals dig up distant 'relatives' and the small village involved makes a killing from the money the entourage/secret service spend for the photo - op.

The most difficult was Nixon, a Quaker, but they did dig up an old Quaker meeting house in the Protestant north. A buddy of mine played a distant cousin of Nixon. He was payed well in $US.

Drinks were taken.

Clnton was like a saint over there. And JFK's picture hangs besidde the Pope's in many homes and pubs. Jackie was the Virgin reincarnate.

If Bush isn't welcome there, how will he fare in Italy with the mandatory audience with the Pope?!?!?!

Israel's out to maybe

What an asshole.

Like was said in apost above this one-they don't hate Americans just our selected leader.

We are the only country in the world that would have 40 percent of it's people favor Bush unconditionally. And I suspect they support him because these people are too proud too admit they were wrong or are racists that just view anyone in the mid east as a terrorist.

You know, I love other countries. Especially the solidly democratic ones like those in Europe, but also australia, india...

When you read about political discourse in these countries, you read things like,

"Socialist Party chairman so-and-so said..."
or
"Green Party MP Mr. X said..."
or
"The Communist Party will be an integral part of the new coalition government..." (i'm thinking india, here)

They actually have real democracies where left-wingers get represented in government! WHAT A NOVEL IDEA!!!!!

43. I find this announcement ...
...incredibly anti-climactic.

What do you think Australia is going to do -- steal the war planes off our bases down there, and drop a cadre of boxing kangaroos on each of our largest cities?

FYI, the Australian people are generally very pro-American, and extremely anti-Bush*. I wouldn't lose any sleep over all 19 million Aussies making a collective decision to start shooting our incoming planes out of the sky, poisoning the lamb shanks they export to the U.S., or refusing to eat any more Big Macs.

It's a symbolic statement. And, frankly, if John Howard had somehow dragged Bush* into a mindless "war", I'd be burning the Aussie flag myself about now. But I sure wouldn't hate the Aussie people.

I really don't understand the panic. Aussies still like Americans, more or less (although why they do is beyond me). It's American policy (and our so-called "leadership") they detest.

I'm going to go worry about something important now -- like wonder what I'm going to do every Thursday night now that E.R. is in reruns.
