Anybody else feel it is offensive...
that the symbol of the Repukes is such a sensitive and INTELLIGENT animal as the Elephant? I mean seriously, they may actually be self-aware (sentient), I don't feel they are appropriate for the GOP, does anybody have any other suggestions for a new political animal? I would pick the vulture, it is a scavenger and opportunist in where it gets its meals, and not that discriminatory as to what it will swallow.

BTW: I do think the Donkey is perfectly appropriate for the Democratic Party: We're stubborn, tough, and when messed with we kick them damn Repukes in the ASS!!!

4. vultures are perfectly sentient
..which I hope lets them off the hook. Once I spent several hours sitting with a vulture flock. It is not true that they are undiscriminating about what they will swallow, my flock was waiting for the kill (an armadillo) to 'age' to the correct degree of perfection. While they waited, they played like puppies, playfully hopping and darting at each other but in a fun way, with no one getting hurt.

10. OK that does it, I'm convinced, how about this...
since most animals have traits that some of us have found endearing, how about this. The Republican Mascot can be a....Rock, immovable, non-intelligent, and IN THE WAY!!!

5. speaking of Donkeys
Donkey in Shrek does a good job of putting a good spin on our mascot.

Anyone interested in the history of the mascots?

http://www.democrats.org/about/donkey.html

The Democrats think of the elephant as bungling, stupid, pompous and conservative -- but the Republicans think it is dignified, strong and intelligent. On the other hand, the Republicans regard the donkey as stubborn, silly and ridiculous -- but the Democrats claim it is humble, homely, smart, courageous and loveable.

i kinda like the vulture.

trex, out dated, goes up against their creationary theory, feeds of garbage, as the world has pumped it up to be big and bad, really is not, cannot kill. has the littlest and weakest of hands, topple it over and it is done. cannot get up

been a couple years since son told me about this dinosaur, so don't hold me to the facts.

Gotta be the hawk, then it can have a wreath below it with a picture of Reagan in it. Or maybe a occult symbol that's not the swastica, cause that's too easy to recognise.

9. Crow
intelligent, predatory, thieving, and eat the young of other birds - along with road kill. They will snatch pretty shiny things for vanity. Their screech pierces the eardrums, and they tend to congregate, while screeching.

I actually like crows.......but they still seem to fit.

14. That would be the "jackass".
When Andrew Jackson ran for president in 1828, his opponents tried to label him a "jackass" for his populist views and his slogan, "Let the people rule." Jackson, however, picked up on their name calling and turned it to his own advantage by using the donkey on his campaign posters.

17. who said the symbol has to be an animal?
How about a pile of waste with stink lines coming off?

(it would be cuter if the waste were drawn with eyes and a mouth and legs and arms -- maybe like that messy, singing character on South Park)

23. Agreed to an extent . . .
But, much like elephants, conservatives consume more than anyone else, leave a bigger pile of shit behind than anyone else, and have an odd habit of getting together and totally destroying anything in their path whether they need to or not.

25. I always thought the elephant was appropriate
Since elephants in captivity are often mistreated and forced to perform for amusement of the spectators, I thought it fit well with the Republican tendancy of cruelty towards others. Also appropriate since Repubs think that they're the elite, and the elephant brings to mind the corrupt 'royalty' of pre-democratic India.

However, if I were going to make a suggestion, it would be a hog. Ugly, self-centered, obnoxious, and more than willing to eat people.

26. I seriously recommend that the Hyena replace the Elephant...
They share so many characteristics with the GOP:
http://www.nature.ca/notebooks/english/hyena.htm
<snip>
The spotted hyena spends its day in holes in the ground, or in rocky dens. They hunt in packs, mostly at night. They chase their prey until it is exhausted. Then the pack sets upon its victim and disembowels it.

These noisy animals have several types of cries and bloodcurdling howls. They make a maniacal laughing sound when they are attacked.

32. I agree with you........
about Elephants. what fantastic animals they are. I watched an "Animal Planet" special about them and was so impressed. They are very social, loyal animals. They are very much "family" oriented. The herd ALL watch out for the young ones(It Takes A Village), even the males. Every time I get the chance now I'll watch something about them. Wish we were more like them. AND you're right! They are waaaayyyy too cool to be the symbol of Repukes.

People don't vote for symbols. However, if they did, it's interesting to note that an elephant generates a lot more shit than a donkey does.

That would be sad in the case of actual elephants - not for the Republican Party.
