Why would soldiers be taught to perform mock executions?

I truly don't know what to make of this sickening tidbit. They pretend to kill prisoners??

1. It's pretty unnerving

to have a gun pointed at you with no shells in it to get you to tell what you do or don't know, and you don't know there are no bullets. Then the trigger is pulled if you don't talk. Then you are told to talk and you still don't know if there is a shell in the next chamber.
