I live in a very conservative community in the lower Hudson Vally in New York . . . the entire town government is Republican, and the town has voted for the Republican in every presidential election I can remember . . .
tonight I picked up a copy of a weekly, equally conservative newspaper that serves the community . . . each week they publish opinions from men/women on the street in response to a question posed by the reporter . . . this week's question was "If you could be President of the United States for one day, what would you do?" . . . notice that the question said nothing about Iraq . . . here are the responses . . .
woman, 76 (who also happens to be a member of the Republican Town Board): "Bring all of our troops home and pray for world peace."
man, 67: "Stay the course!"
woman, 50+: "I'd end the war, especially after the atrocity which happened today (the beheading of an American citizen) even though I believe the President is doing the best he can."
boy, 10: "Bring everyone home from Iraq. We have a personal friend serving over there right now and me and my family pray for him and all of the soldiers every night just before dinner."
woman, 29: "Bring them home, every last one of them (soldiers). We don't belong there and we have no business continuing to stay there."
trust me . . . these responses are genuinely remarkable for this community . . . if the people in this town have turned against the war, Bush is toast . . . unless he can steal the election, which I certainly don't put past him . . .
