Bush's BOLD DEFENSE of Rumsfeld
Let's face it, this is the absolutely WORST thing they could have done in terms of what's good for them and the BEST thing they could have done as far as we're concerned.

Rumsfeld is being accused of being responsible for torture, and Bush/Cheney/Rove says he's the BEST EVER and the nation OWES him! Iraq is a failure, we're torturing Iraqi's and it's ostensibly Rummy's fault, but he's still the best ever and we owe him???? It's obvious they're going for the humongous Orwellian lie. This is par for the course for them, and it's typical propoganda 101. GO BIG! Not only claim the exact oppossite of what's reality to confuse and muddle the issue, but do it AUDACIOUSLY and over the top! The problem for them is when even Gallup has your disapproval at 51% this won't work. 51% (at the VERY LEAST) of the people are now critical of these criminals and this tactic will absolutely fail with them. 51% (AT LEAST) will see the incredible disconnect.

I'm loving every second of their boldness. It's the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

1. We are headed for totalitarian national security state via corruption-
that isn't gonna fly, though.
NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.

4. Then it was all the more stupid.
Another blatant example of a flip-flop for him (like first opposing the 9-11 commission, the Homeland Security Dept., etc., then backing them).

Average American Voter: "You're FIRING him? But last week you said he was the best Defense Secy. EVER."

It will just look like another case of him doing what should have been done a day late and a dollar short, and (as usual) only under intense political pressure.

14. Yes, that would be a possibility in which they could come out looking OK.
Edited on Tue May-11-04 11:53 AM by Brotherjohn
Nevertheless, your Secy. of Defense resigning due to a torture scandal does not bode well for any administration.

It would be about the best outcome they could have, but it would simply be damage control, and the whole thing is still going to take its toll.

19. It would be best for the Nation if Bush resigns but its too far fetched
at this time.

He does look very worried of late, most likely due to seeing those second batch of photos. He knows if they get out, mucho damage will result including the loss in November.

2. This action reveals, once and for all, that they are clinically insane.
Edited on Tue May-11-04 11:40 AM by Brotherjohn
It's the absolute WORST tactic for them to take on this one. I mean, AT LEAST look like you're taking your time and being thoughtful on the matter.

But to immediately come out and say he's "superb", and the "best ever"! Astounding! This goes WAY beyond just telling the "big lie" for propaganda purposes. The only explanation I can come up with is that they are so self-centered and arrogant as to be clinically insane. They do not even see how someone could challenge their opinion of Rumsfeld.

6. *Bush has to look like Mr. Tough Guy, do no wrong...
Edited on Tue May-11-04 11:35 AM by trailrunners
*Bush can't fire Rummy because it would show weakness on his part - he didn't pick the right guy. He has to look like the big tough, do no wrong guy right? I think that's why he probably won't fire any of his advisors before the election - which is fine with me. Bush is that big of a dick...

7. You know how they love to talk about "troops in harm's way?"
As in, don't criticize the chimp while we have troops in harm's way? Don't endanger the troops in harm's way by questioning the mission in Iraq? How the heck to they figure those will enrage anti-US fighters, but propping Rummy up, after discovery of tortures, doesn't? Why aren't they talking about "troops in harm's way" when it comes to how they're handling this horror?

8. No, it's deeply troubling. They have no fear.
They should, in a viable democracy, be running scared for the centre. But they're emboldened.

10. This administration understands that the public has the attention span...
of a 4 year old.

This whole torture scandal will be out of the news in a few weeks. Something else just as big will come along and bump it out.

Shrub and company should have been toasted by soooo many scandals before and they've amounted to nothing because our media downplays it and people are just looking the other way at the next distraction.

This administration realizes this and plays it like a violin. It's quite a brilliant spectacle to watch. Like a car wreck.

Were much higher. He doesn't have that luxury anymore. 51% (at the very least) will no longer give him the benefit of the doubt that they did before. You can't pull this off when a majority dissaprove of you already.

but a tragedy if they succeed in putting it over.

17. Exactly!
Read the USA Today article. It's incredible. He sees pictures of even worse torture, then says we owe Rummy a debt of gratitude.

18. note that bush's* BOLD DEFENSE of rummy was his usual weak,
bumbling, stumbling, pausing, stupid inane rhetoric.

it is always the press who fills in the words and the feeling for him and translates a sub-par, near-coherent statement into a breathtakingly grandiloquent expression of strength and fortitude.

20. One predictable reaction:
"After the torture and vile acts by the American army, President Bush goes out and congratulates Rumsfeld. It's just incredible. I am in total shock," said the editor of the influential Algerian national daily al-Watan.
