Their spin is irrelevant. These poll numbers are GOOD!
Think about it. Despite all the attempts at spinning Bush's miserable numbers to benefit Bush, what they are trying to spin is the people's opinions which have already been registered. It is after the fact. And it is not changing those opinions (Bush's numbers continue to plummet).

They may say "The Bush decline did not produce new support for Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry" based on the "likely" voter result essentially remaining unchanged (http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/polls/2004-05-10-bush-poll_x.htm). But the fact still remains that the race among Registered Voters has gone from a 47-47% tie to a 50-44% Kerry lead. This in only a week, and as Kerry is only just beginning to run ads.

Also, of course, as many here have pointed out: Gallup's "likely" voters pool has traditionally been weighted towards Republicans. "Likely" voters is open to interpretation. "Registered" voters is not. But even in the traditionally Bush-leaning Gallup poll, these numbers are NOT good for Bush

- Registered Voters favor Kerry by 50-44%.
- National Adults favor Kerry by 51-43%.
- Kerry holds a 5% lead in each of those groups even with Nader in the race.
- 62% are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the country.
- A majority of people in the country disapprove of the job Bush is doing.
- A majority of people in the country think it was not worth going to war in Iraq.

The media and Bush campaign can spin all they want, but it is already too late. This is how the people feel, and the numbers are moving away from them. Telling us "how they feel" (spinning) is irrelevant to the actual numbers, which already SHOW US how they feel.

9. I agree
Bush's approval ratings keep dropping, and I believe they have not bottomed out. Kerry is fine.

13. I would wear my "Bush or Chimp" tshirt back then
and people would scowl at me on the street. Now people come up and ask where I got it.

they spin the headline tags, or the "commentary" blip, knowing most folks don't read the reports or the poll specifics. Headlines and sound bites are the news, now.

12. In a race involving an incumbent president
an average of 85 percent of the undecideds go to the challenger. This is from a study someone did of a number of presidential elections.

10. And the operative phrase is...
"Kerry hasn't even begun to run his ads."

It looks as though JFK2 is running a beautiful tactic here...Get Bu*sh to drain his warchest on ads 6 months out--just to stay even, then run a backloaded campaign his to the disaffected in the battleground states.

Sweet.

21. Heard an old political saw today on AAR
Never commit homicide when the victim is commiting suicide.

I had previously heard: Never get in the way of a good train wreck, from a WP essay.

Both seem to apply in this case.

but poll numbers this early are not indicative of victory for anyone. I would feel better if numbers were lower considering how much bad news has come out against bush and his policy. Still early but encouraging.

22. I've said it before, I'll say it again...
Gore won more votes in 2000.
No Gore voter will move to the Bush camp in 2004
More veterans/military who voted for Bush in 2000 will vote Dem this time than the other way around
Dems are fired up - the GOP base is demoralized

We will win.
