Early Iraq Abuse Accounts Met With Silence

Detailed allegations of psychological abuse, deprivation, beatings and deaths at U.S.-run prisons in Iraq (news - web sites) were met by public silence from the U.S. Army last October — six months before shocking photographs stirred world outrage and demands for action.

These early accounts by freed prisoners, reported by The Associated Press last fall, told of detainees punished by hours lying bound in the sun; being attacked by dogs; being deprived of sufficient water; spending days with hoods over their heads. snip

1. Shocking, isn't it?

Did they SERIOUSLY think they could keep this from the media? And indefinitely, to boot? Remember the journalists, roaming around Iraq taking their lives into their hands just by being there.

Recall the Palestinian journalist, armed with a camcorder, standing outside the Abu Ghraib prison earlier this year. Remember the tank that came barreling out and killed him.

Afterwards, the Americans defended their actions by saying, "he looked dangerous". Oh, how right they were.

2. The whole adventure is a death camp. I can't figure why anyone is
even shocked by this....I mean it doesn't bother Americans at all that we launched an unprovoked attack against a disarmed country. And now that we KNOW that we did that, without a doubt, we STILL DON'T STOP. We are a country of violent bigots who will rationalize any kind of hateful thing we do.

We've killed tens of thousands for doing nothing and yet this upsets us. Why this? I mean why does it upset people when we are murdering Iraqis daily for doing nothing to us?

3. Sounds like Pearle, Negroponte, Abrams, Wolfawitz, etc. are back on the
Job again. It is the same MO as during Reagan's term.
