An Iraqi sun beats harshly down
On eyes that watch approaching night.
Stunned brain records the grit of sand
Clotted with his blood.

He never asked to be the spear flung from Imperial hand
For nothing more than corporate wealth.
He'd signed on in a time when death meant more
Than just another vote.

His feet are cold, he shivers in the blaze.
Ice forming on his soul.
Shadow of the medic
Warms him, fading.

Cold from within fights heat
From above. darkness begins
To edge out the sun. He knows.
