Ashcroft breast covering incident
A while back, we all snickered when Ashcroft ordered the naked breast of the statue of justice covered with an $8,000 drape... even though he tried to blame that on an aide. I used that in an email to a friend of mine as kind of a throwaway at the end of a paragraph about how they were cracking down on porn.

He responded that Clinton signed the Communication Decency Act (CDA)and that the covering of the breast was only done to comply with that CDA. I did a quick online search and could not find confirmation of the CDA being cited as the reason.

is this true?

1. The breast was covered to comply with John Ashcroft!
He's just using the classic Rethuglican tactic of blaming others for something he did but doesn't want to take responsbility for because it backfired. And IF he was really upset about the statue being broadcast, all he had to do was simply MOVE HIS PODIUM!!!

2. Probably not ...
but in his 'Blame Clinton' mode, anything people question about Asscroft will get a response like that.

4. Ask your friend to prove his claim.
I don't remember anything about a CDA (what is it, anyway?) being mentioned at the time. Ask your friend for proof of his claim that Clinton's law led to Ashcroft's statue coverup. Maybe he knows why the U.N.'s reproduction of "Geurnica" was covered up when Powell spoke there, too. (sarcasm)

7. The CDA was struck down in '97, so your friend is talking out of his ass
The Communications Decency Act was struck down on June 26, 1997, by the Supreme Court.

There's a 'CDA II' - the COPA - which was struck down also on March 6, 2003, by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.

8. PHOTO of asscroft giving a speech in the National Art Gallery
Edited on Wed Apr-14-04 10:52 AM by amen1234
asscroft got really upset about this photo, and he forced the Board of Directors of the National Art Gallery to REMOVE all the naked statues from the lobby of the museum, which now contains mostly old grecian vases....it's also true that asscroft used taxpayers money to cover the "Majesty of Justice" statue inside the Justice Department building in DC.....

Betty Bowers did a little satire about asscroft and naked statues...

Patriotic Republicans Unctuously Dressing Erotic Statues

....When viewing a recent video of a press conference held in the lobby of the Justice Building, Mr. Ashcroft almost imperceptivity quivered when he noticed the uncloaked breast of the Majesty of Justice statue behind him hovering in alarming proximity to his lush lips. Mr. Ashcroft was so unnerved by this unchaste flashing of the impudent, attention-seeking 12-foot harlot behind him, that expensive curtains have been ordered to shield the American public her shamelessness.

9. It's important to remember that these were Ashcroft's priorities
While OBL was planning the attacks on 9/11, Ashcroft was covering up statues.

10. my mistake
He used the Decency Act as an example of censorship by arbitrary standards, comparing the act (one arbitrary standard) to Asscroft covering the statue's breast - another arbitrary standard.
