For example a white man and a black woman have a child. The child is considered 'black'. HUH? Its like the wingnuts forget that that child is half white too.

And sometimes by the governments own definitions the child grows up believing they are just 'black'. Instead of taking pride in both the lineages of the the mother and the father. Which by the way most likely have multiple blacks, asians and whites in both lines.

Geneticists studying americans geneolgy recently came to an interesting discovery. 99% of blacks in america have at least one white ancestor, and 25-50% of american whites have at least one black ancestor.

And beyond that the lines are blurry for example look at egypt. Technically they are called arabs, but they are very much darker skinned and have far more african traights then say someone in Iraq.

As for hispanics well many hispanics are far closer to being white, then being native. Or black. Hispanics are just a mix of everyone at this point. I know a 'white' girl from brazil, and she definately has predominately white charateristics but she also clearly has some black and native characterists.

Populations blend way way faster then we give them credit for. 300 years is a LONG time for mating. Think of how many different ancestors you've had over the last 300 years. OK a generation is 25 years say. And that makes 12 generations. So 2 to the twelth power.

Is how many ancestors you've had in just the last 300 years. 2 to the 16th power if we take it to 400 years. Is anyone claiming that none of these 65,536 ancestors we all have over the last 400 years ever had some non pure white blood in them.

I have to take myself I am way darker then most 'whites' where I live yet I am still considered white.

To me people talking about whites becoming a minority just dont' have a clue about how exponential numbers work. They dont' realize that the white genes spread in mixed children. And that already the other 'races' have many white ancestors.

In addition if they really think there 'white' genes are that good, then quit complaining about it and get to making babies!! Even if they meet a non 'white' woman. They can call the kids whites for arguments sake. (equally as arbitrary as calling a mullato kid black), and in 100 years they could have tons of ancestors. Infact if for the next 100 years each of their offspring has 6 children, and they have 6 kids to begin with, in 100 years their genes will be in 1296 people.

In 200 years their genes will be in 1.679 million people! In 400 years a number bigger then the calculator can handle. (obviously there is some level of inter-breeding of distant cousins etc.)

Infact we are much more related then we think. Take any two americans and you don't have to go far back to find a common ancestor. These artificial differences like creed people create are so ridiculus. Lets all just face it the numbers prove we are all very related. And that racial differences are with the most extreme arbitrariness.

Getting one 'ethnic' group to fight against another 'ethnic' group seems like a really cheesy way of getting to fight for a rich man to me.

Sadly most people eat that crap up. Like people where I live thinking they are Irish and having Irish pride. You look at their geneology though and they are predominantly non irish in most cases.

Not like Irish is some sort of 'pure' strain though. English have been in there for a long time. And indeed there is different groups that were originaly on the isle of Ire that didn't consider themselves of the same ethnic group of the current Irish.

I consider my race: human. I know I have quite a few non white ancestors back in the 1800's. Of course I'm taught in school I'm white and came from europe. And was beating down the slaves at every chance my ancestors got. However I look back wait a minute some of those slaves were my ancestors. And yes I am 'white' mainly. And notice how the change the definition.

First people have say 'irish' pride. Then you look back and say wait a minute many in your family are non Irish. Then they are 'white'. Well the same bigots who try to group people into races, and are happy they are 'white' don't consider the caucasian arabs as white. Even though many of them are 'whiter' then many american 'whites'.

When I check my race boxes on things I just leave it blank or put mixed if its there. Which it never is. I refuse to call myself just white, when I have ancestors from all over, seems like a slap in the face to them.

Why does our government who is supposedly trying to stop racism keep dividing us into different races. Most kids don't even think about racial differences until they start being pigeonholed into groups.

Forcing people to check off what arbitrary race they are to me is in itself racism. Racism: treating people differently depending on their race.

Oh ya final note, there is two types of people in this world. Those who divide people into two groups and those that don't.:D

15. I HATE incompetant reporting of Census Data

I use Census data almost every day of my life, and the reporting on this is flaky to put it mildly.

Some basic facts on Census data all should know:

1) There is a difference between race and ethnicity
2) Hispanic is an ethnicity, and is inclusive - you can be something else (white, black, asian, pacific islander, etc.) and STILL be Hispanic
3) If you add up all the whites, blacks, asians, pacific islanders, and hispanics, you get >100% of the population. This is true at any level of geography - from the Census Tract to County to State to Nation. On the other hand, if you add up all the whites, blacks, asians, and pacific islanders, you get 100% of the population.

Comparing whites to hispanics is ridiculous - most hispanics ARE whites.

What this story should be saying is that white NON hispanics will no longer be >50% of the population, which is a FAR cry from "whites will be < 50% of the population."

Because you're right. Whites make up 59% of the population of California. Non-hispanic whites however account for only 46.7% of the total.

However, the real issue here is one of cultural identity. While one can be both white and hispanic, most hispanics do not consider themselves "white" in a cultural sense.

but I know a whole lot of white people who will need some serious medication to accept this reality.

My racist grandfather has changed a lot of his attitudes, lately, although he is still voting GOP. He told us that the hole in the ozone layer is going to make people as pale as me (I'm a fair-skinned red head) either die or have to be inside at all times, so it would do white people well to start inter-breeding with darker people in order to adapt to the changing environment. I'm not sure if he's right or wrong about the scientific theory, but considering he once told me he'd never approve of me dating/marrying/sleeping with a black, italian or arab, it is funny that he would say this now.

When your grandparents say "what would your kids be" in connection with inter-racial parentage, always say "your great-grandkids". It shuts them up fast.

Due to interrmarriage, "race" will mean as little as ethnicity among whites does today. Remember, until the middle of the 20th century ethnicity among white Americans caused a ton of discrimination and there was de facto segregation between the groups. Interrmarriage blurred the lines and made them meaningless.

Our only hope of getting out of the situation we're in now is to make sure those white guys become a smaller and smaller part of the population.

No one is more comfortable with a multiracial, white-minority America than me, and no one would be more pleased than myself to see wingnuts and the GOP lose the upper hand in this country permanently. But I wouldn't get too smug about these predictions about America turning into a white-minority country.

Let me point out something: the meaning of "white" is fluid and it is as much cultural as it is racial. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there was actually a time when Poles, Italians, Jews, and even Irish were considered "non-white", and they all used to be solidly Democrat. Today, they're all considered white, and plenty of them are right-wing Rethugs.

Just because someone's racial makeup isn't considered "white" today, that doesn't mean they'll be considered "non-white" in 2050. I'm sure there are plenty of kids of mixed white and Asian, Latino or even African-American descent whose descendents will eventually be considered "white." And as a Korean-American, I can vouch that there are plenty of Asian-American wingnuts and they are perfectly at home in the GOP. (In fact, my parents are moderate Republicans themselves.)

So, don't assume that a white-minority USA will mean fewer Rethugs -- or, for that matter, that every descendent of today's Asian and Latino Americans will even be considered "non-white."
