If they weren't for the Civil Freakin' War for Heaven's sake (and I understand Lincoln DID suspend habeas corpus during that conflict) then I don't see how any justification could be made for such a move. Historians?

1. No
Not even during the middle of a Civil War or even a World War.

The United States has never ever suspended a national election.

3. Right, and the freaky thing about the 1864 election was that
apparently soldiers were not allowed to vote absentee. They had to go HOME, during the war, just to vote!!

It boggles the mind.
