Survey: NKU teens break abstinence pledges
Most can't refrain from sexual acts
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Kevin Eigelbach
Post staff reporter

Most teens who pledged abstinence from sex before marriage broke their pledges.
A majority of the ones who kept their pledges and didn't have vaginal intercourse had oral sex. Those were provocative findings from more than 500 teens surveyed at Northern Kentucky University. Ongoing study shows mixed view of sexual habits among students
As part of an ongoing study of sexual habits of young people, Northern Kentucky University psychology professors Angela Lipsitz and Paul Bishop surveyed 527 freshmen psychology students in the spring of 2002. The results of the survey were first presented at the 15th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Society in May of last year:

• 16.3 percent of the students had pledged to remain virgins before marriage at some point in their middle school or high school years. Most students (82 percent) had not had sexual intercourse before pledging.

• Most who pledged (60.7 percent) broke their vows.

• Virgins who pledged who had intercourse were less likely than others to use a condom at first intercourse, or ever to have used a condom at all.

• A majority of virgins who pledged who kept their pledges reported having oral sex (55 percent).

• Those who pledged were more likely to have more conservative values than those who didn't. Nearly 33 percent of pledgers reported being very religious, versus only 9 percent of non-pledgers.

• In addition, those who pledged were more likely to have had "abstinence-only" sex education in middle school by a margin of 44 percent to 24 percent.

"That seems kind of disturbing to me," said Paul Myers of Union, an NKU freshman. "I'm against any kind of premarital sex; I think that's wrong." The findings suggest that abstinence only sex education may not effectively protect the health of all young people, said one of the survey's authors, NKU psychology professor Angela Lipsitz.

3. Kids will ALWAYS do stuff they SAY they won't
That's what kids DO..

It's just plain MEAN and stupid for parents to try to get them to promise not to..

We always just told our kids what the consequences were and let them know that we would not always be able to "fix" it for them..

5. What do they expect
When they ask people to make a pledge to supress one of the most natural and powerful urges we possess as human beings? And at a time when their hormones are raging like a four alarm fire.

6. The Pledge...
This is from the True Love Waits part of the lifeway.com site...

Believing that true love waits, I make a commitment to God, myself, my family, my friends, my future mate, and my future children to a lifetime of purity including sexual abstinence from this day until the day I enter a biblical marriage relationship.

I've seen this in longer versions, but this is the meat of the thing.

What I figure happens: These kids' parents tell them "we're going to go do something fun." They all load up into the car and head to church, where the preacher, their parents, their youth group leader, and a lot of their friends are all there. Then they find out they're going to swear The Pledge: no sex until marriage.

That's almost like Vito Corleone's "offer you can't refuse." What are you gonna do, tell your mom, "no, mom, I think I'm gonna go out, get laid a couple of times and sleep on this"? No, you'll sign The Pledge. You probably won't get all the way to marriage.

I would like children to pledge (if that's what you want to call it) to not have sex while they're still in high school. That's not too much to ask; just wait until you've finished your high school, then you can screw like bonobos if you want.

9. interesting . . .
quote "Most students (82 percent) had not had sexual intercourse before pledging"

so that means 18% pledged to remain virgins even though they weren't?

huh?

11. those sincere teens who made the pledge but did not keep it
Edited on Tue Mar-09-04 07:08 PM by Marianne
will be saddled with guilt now.

Perhaps for the rest of their lives unless they come to an epiphany and understand that sex is part of the nature of things and is perfectly fine if performed responsibly. If that is the case, they will have to challenge or leave their church.

This abstinence only thing is one of the nore ridiculous things that Bush has condoned and actually wasted our money on.
