Gays Getting Married: Good Timing or Bad Timing?
At first I pumped my fist as San Fran bloomed forth in gay marriages. Instead of protests or speeches or petitions that have been going on for ages and ignored by the public, this brought the issue to headline news and then some. I also felt that seeing these marriages, these people, their happiness and many with their kids looking on would make a lot of people look and say, "what the hell was all the bigoted fuss about all these years".

But awhile later, I began to wonder if the marriages should have waited until after the November elections---regardless of who won. If a Dem, it would be easier for the president to help their cause. If Bush re-elected, they could make his life hell. But the real concern was that this just set the stage for Bush to play to his right wing filthy, bigoted zealots by having him propose the amendment. This helps Bush bring his base together (and some of them were drifting). If these marriages weren't going on and Bush came out with his amendment proposal, it would be even more obvious to the public that the guy would fool even with our most beloved document just to get re-elected.

Perhaps the Gay community chose this moment because Bush was going to make a big deal out of the MA case anyway and they were trying to have the public see the light before Bush flushed everything back into darkness. I don't know. I just hope this ends up being the right choice of the right time.

2. I've always held back ...
... but this isn't my issue.

If the G/L/B/T community wants to push it, I'll gladly lend a shoulder. But before it became an issue, I was willing to let it wait.

But I'm hetero, so it was never my call to make.

3. It is what it is
There is no such thing as "the perfect time" for anything. Anytime you do a thing is the perfect time.

I'll gladly lend a hand in advance of civil rights anytime.

For this year, conservatives can just stay home and fuck themselves for all I care.

4. great timing
There is never a good time to grant an underdog their civil rights, if you listen to the nay-sayers. Actually, it's a terrific time for gay marriage. With cities and states bankrupt, the money from those license fees, which perhaps would usually not be considered worth considering, suddenly becomes worth going after -- and it looks like more and more mayors will come forward to offer these marriages.

The bigots will vote for Chimpy anyway. The kind of person who would pick their own pocket to keep a black kid or a gay man from getting on the bus, Alan Greenspan could stand on their front lawn and tell 'em the GOP is planning to take Social Security and they'd say fine, as long as it means no black or gay person would get any.

6. Mixed.
Bush has already screwed up big time by using the Constitution in the name of politics. If he hadn't had done that, this would have been more of a problem for the Dems.
