Some Oct surprise, along with a summer of continuous Repub propaganda
I agree there will be a surprise, but I think it will be a continuous roll, starting right after the Peoples Republic Convention in NYC...OR...

Reagan dies somewhere right before the convention, that way they can continue the Reagan lovefest (with extra free air time so the story doesn't die and keeps its legs...OR

he dies during or immediately after the Democratic convention, to take any and all positive press away from the Democratic nominee.

I think UBL is a given...not too long after Reagan. During the "capture" of UBL it will be learned that he was in contact with Iranian leaders, planning some sort of dastardly plot against the US...possibly with nukulur weapons, or WMD's from Iraq that were "smuggled" there by Saddam prior to the war. This conveniently solves the WMD issue for the administration, and will constitute a "major crisis" and we will be perpetually scared every day until the election.

Kerry (I am assuming he will win the nomination based on the course of events so far) will be forced onto the defensive and unable to present his plan for America. He will be further demagogued as a pacifist/anti-war/far left radical who would welcome the attack and overthrow of our government by Islamic radicals. There will be some sort of "scandal" linking him in some absurd way to some Muslim extremist organization, and will be believed without question by the lemmings we call the American electorate.

With the Diebold machines in place in critical districts in critical states, the undecideds will heavily "break" for the president the weekend before the election, giving Bush a supposed "landslide" and a "mandate" to wage war with Iran. He won't even wait until the inaguration, because the threat will be "too great."

I see this as clear as I've ever seen anything in my life.

1. I agree with your view of a continuous...
...drumbeat of propaganda.

I don't think we can really predict Reagan's death or the capture of Osama Bin Laden, but both of those things could well happen.

"Kerry (I am assuming he will win the nomination based on the course of events so far) will be forced onto the defensive and unable to present his plan for America. He will be further demagogued as a pacifist/anti-war/far left radical who would welcome the attack and overthrow of our government by Islamic radicals."

Yup. I mostly agree here. I don't think they will be able to paint Kerry as someone who would welcome an attack on the US by Islamic radicals, but the GOP will run countless ads showing Kerry as "too weak on defense to be trusted in a dangerous world".

"With the Diebold machines in place in critical districts in critical states, the undecideds will heavily 'break' for the president the weekend before the election, giving Bush a supposed 'landslide' and a 'mandate' to wage war with Iran. He won't even wait until the inaguration, because the threat will be 'too great.'"

I don't buy the Diebold conspiracy theories, but I do agree that the election may break one way or the other shortly before the election. I would say it is more likely to break for Bush, but it could go the other way.

Thoughtful post, too pessimistic in my view, but some good points.

3. Hard not to be pessimistic
sometimes...I try to keep positive, but I dread what awaits us just over the horizon.

5. Nothing wrong with being realistic
All we know is that no matter what they do it will be a surprise.

However, there is hope. Everyday more and more people like you are waking up. Right now the WH is in chaos, they no longer control the situation like they did the first two years. W is a basket case. Cheney is a major liability. Condi can't open her mouth any more without incriminating herself, Perle just slinked back into his hidey hole, there is talk of canning Wolfowitz and more, much, much more.

It is still possible that they all may implode before we even get to the convention. I don't think catching Osama or Ronnie dying will make enough of a difference for W to reverse the tide now.

2. It will be difficult to "define" Kerry when...
Edited on Sun Feb-29-04 01:45 AM by BeatleBoot
Bush's credibility is in shambles.

For the public, it started with, "we were all wrong" coming from David Kay.

You can't define your opponent when no one believes what you are saying.

They are so freaked that they had to resort to the "gay marriage issue" to try to divert America's attention from their own failures.

On edit: spelling (twice)

4. Who cares about credibility when you are SCARED?
Bush Co., with help from a compliant corporately owned media will do all in their power to scare the living daylights out of the American electorate. Given that visuals are more important than text I would expect a lot of 9/11 related visuals.
Bush will wrap himself in the flag while denying that same flag to the Democrats. Dems being fearful of alienating the "NASCAR" or "office park" dads will continue to allow the pugs to define the parameters of the agenda, thus appearing weak and indecisive in a time of crisis.

6. The perfect visual?

Ever since I saw this picture, it seemed to be an omen for what they might be thinking.
