Lou Dobbs and Glassman are going at it on Moneyline!
They almost got hot. Dobbs let him finish and Glassman won't let Dobbs finish. Dobbs is bringing up reality vs theory.

"It's not working, Jim!"

"What are you going to retrain them for, Jim?"

4. Ya know, I'm starting to really like Lou Dobbs.
He's been all over the shifting "outsource" economy, and has been terribly critical of it.

Yesterday, when the "Poll of the Day" question asked "Was Bush Correct When He Said 'Outsourcing' Would Eventually Be Good For The Economy," he revealed the answers, stating something to the effect of "5% replied yes, and I'm proud to announce that 95% of you said no."

Go, Lou. You're really beginning to redeem yourself in my eyes.

55. I've been liking him for some time
I rarely miss his show. He is a true "compassionate conservative." I know in my heart he is a republican, but, IMHO, he is fair to dems and pugs alike. I wouldn't hesitate to vote for him for President, as long as no good dem was running. He, alone, has kept corporate malfeasance and job outsourcing in front of the public eye. For this, and his inherent politeness to dems who visit with him, we owe him. No matter what hat he wears, he is a good American.

34. I've gotten so I don't miss Dobbs anymore.
He's rare these days: an ethical capitalist who realizes it's labor that creates wealth. The greatest danger to capitalism is greedy, unethical capitalists.

This is the key to understanding why shipping jobs overseas has become more attractive in recent years. Laborers, even in the US, only receive less than 40% of the value (NIBTDA) of their labor. The real interest in shipping jobs to other countries isn't just the cost of labor (i.e. compensation) ... it's the cost of making plants safe, the cost of workman's compensation, the cost of unemployment when they repeatedly "downsize", the cost of paying taxes (like for a military budget), the cost of cleaning up their own pollutants, and the cost of civil liabilities. Every reputable study still shows that American workers are the most cost-effective (productive) on the planet ... and the American CEO is the least cost-effective.

and I find myself quoting him in my calls to Guy James.

it isn't always great, but nights like tonight.

and when he said: it's not a jobless recovery, it's a job LOSS recovery.

and when he said to a guest who talked about the rising stock market: I don't care about the market, what about the COUNTRY?

Edited on Fri Feb-13-04 01:07 AM by Ysabel
I'm having a bit of trouble with the idea of "ethical capitalist"...

edit - typo...

editing twice - to ask a question (and I don't really expect an answer, nor do I really mean to detract - just sort of pondering to myself and to whoever else) what does capitalism mean - if not - "one entity getting over on another entity"...?

er - editing thrice - and hey! where's my old sig (okay - I really know they were all deleted a long time ago - guess I'll have to correct that)...

In the meantime...

46. He's also angry about corporate corruption
He's been keeping that count of how many days since the Enron scandal broke and how many people (not) indicted. But now I see that he ends the program with a list of companies exporting jobs. Has he stopped reporting on the foot-dragging on dealing with corporate scandals?

I don't watch Lou every day, but I too caught the exchange with Glassman and was amazed. I do recommend catching the rerun, or getting the transcript.

48. Yes, he called him a sycophant!

I love TiVo because of instant replay! Towards the end of their argument, Lou said:

"You sound like a cult member! There's a mantra -- you say 'market,' you say 'largest' and 'dynamic' and that simply removes the need for rationality?

Then they were talking over each other some but I heard the 'sycophant' slur again:

".. . . and you're too smart to buy in, as a sycophantic response to your corporate bosses, and say 'Whatever you want to do'. . ."

I guess everyone saw the clip from Glassman' article, which referred to Dobbs as sycophantic?

Amazingly reminiscent of WWE! :-)

I truly appreciate Dobbs's continuing discussion of outsourcing, problems caused by NAFTA and WTO, and problems with excessive immigration. It isn't fair that people sneak into the U.S. from Mexico and live here illegally, when legal immigrants from countries like the Philippines have to wait years and years to be able to bring their family members over.

25. Glassman.....Dow 36,000......remember that book?
What makes the Dow at 10,000 particularly noteworthy for us is that it means that the index has to rise a mere 26,000 more points to vindicate the prophecy of those two jokers who achieved 15 seconds of fame when we were in full bubble by predicting it would hit 36,000 . We kind of miss them; they were always good for comic relief. Another 500 points and we've a hunch they'll be back peddling the same old moonshine.

For a while I was a voice in the wilderness. I always felt I would be hammered by taking up for him. I never was, but sometimes there were pregnant pauses. Months ago I stopped watching my local news and Peter Jennings so I could watch Lou Dobbs. I've never missed 'em. Also, after him, I watch Anderson Cooper. He's not as good as Lou, but he is definitely coming along. Good for CNN. I am going to write them with thanks for these shows. I hope a lot of you do, also.

Exporting Lou Dobbs Print Mail

By James K. Glassman
Posted: Tuesday, February 10, 2004

ARTICLES
Scripps Howard News Service
Publication Date: February 9, 2004

What's gotten into Lou Dobbs? Once a sensible, if self-important and sycophantic, CNN anchor, he has suddenly become a table-thumping protectionist.

Dobbs has been running a series--praised by the AFL-CIO's Rich Trumka as a "nightly crusade"--called "Exporting America." Slanted and inflammatory, it decries "outsourcing" or "offshoring"--that is, U.S. businesses using suppliers in other countries, like workers in Ghana processing New York parking tickets or programmers in India writing IBM software.

Another word for outsourcing is "trade," an endeavor, as economists learned early on, that benefits both parties to the exchange.

Nothing has changed since Adam Smith wrote in 1776: "It is the maxim of every prudent master of a family never to make at home what it will cost him more to make than to buy."

Still, writes Julian Sanchez of Reason magazine, "Free traders are trapped in a public policy version of 'Groundhog Day,' forced to refute the same fallacious arguments over and over again, decade after decade."

While trade can cause pain to some workers, lack of trade causes far more. Imagine if software firms did not search the world for the best labor at the best price. Consumers would pay more, and shareholders would have less to reinvest, which would mean fewer jobs for Americans.

"While trade can cause pain to some workers, lack of trade causes far more. Imagine if software firms did not search the world for the best labor at the best price. Consumers would pay more, and shareholders would have less to reinvest, which would mean fewer jobs for Americans."

uhhhhh, lesseee here.

"some pain"??????

what exactly do you MEAN by that, you callous PRICK?

so, software firms search globe for cheapest labor, consumers pay less.

how can you pay less than NOTHING, when you;ve lost your JOB, and don't have any money to buy ANYthing.

shareholders would have less to invest, meaning fewer jobs?????/

what an ASS! shareholder investing means buying more STOCK, not companies investing in more capital, creating employment, etc.

you ASSWIPE, even as these companies increase their bottom lines, they EXPORT jobs! that's one of the chief ways they're improving their profitability: laying people off, outsourcing, forcing that fabulous "increased productivity" on those lucky enough to keep theirs.

that's why my brother quit his excellent job at GE when that prick Jack Welch decided that he, and lots of others could do the job of two or three people, forcing him to do the work of a guy in Cleveland that got FIRED. My brother did his own job in Milwaukee, while commuting back and forth from Cleveland for awhile. He told them to stuff it. When he quit, they had a going away party for him, and half the office (on the QT) asked him if they could get a job with his new company.

Bite my lily-white ass, you greedy fascist pig

Glassman is the head of several organizations that "mimic" think-tanks and conduct those fake grassroot letter campaigns (also known as "astroturfing") where the same form-letter supporting some repug issue is sent to papers all around country.

37. WOW! "Tonight's Thought" on Lou Dobbs - Einstein Quote
Lou Dobbs wrapped up that explosive Glassman segment (don't look for him to appear again on CNN anytime soon) with Tonight's Thought:

"Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions." - Albert Einstein

After reading the quote, Lou added, in a final swipe at Glassman, "We have demonstrated the truth tonight, again, of Albert Einstein's words."

47. My Thank You Letter To Mr. Dobbs
Mr. Dobbs,

I wanted to thank you for speaking truth to power on the US Economy.

Your discussion today with Mr. James Glassman was the most honest and direct reporting I have ever seen on the current US economy.

You have my undying gratitude for your continued focus on the issue of off-shoring and outsourcing.

Displaced and unemployed American workers are eternally grateful for your efforts.

Please keep up the good work.

Sincerely,

MHR
Dallas, TX

50. And he mentioned the magic phrase
"cheap labor"

It was so nice to see Lou reveal Glassman for the jackass that he is. I have never liked him, and I still don't.

If it's replayed - definitely a must see.

51. Was that not ** Incredible ** ????
Wow, Lou!! Rarely have I seen such truth telling and indignation on television. Stunned, I am. I can't help but love Lou for his using the phrase "corporate crooks" and his scorecard on how many Enron execs have been indicted/gone to jail, etc. But I don't know if I've ever seen a journalist nail anyone like Dobbs did tonight. That was just surreal.

58. James Glassman is a buffoon.
He's a Randian (he's quite proud of it.) He used to moderate a show on either CNBC or MSNBC. I actually heard the motherfucker defend child labor in the Third World once. (I seem to remember that the show ended raight after that...) He's a vile piece of shit.

Right before Dobbs made that hilarious "cult" remark tonight, I was thinking that Glassman sounded like a Baptist of the "God said it, I believe it and that settles it" variety. He's actually blinkered enough to think that corporations reinvest their profits :7 How out to lunch can you be?

Go read a few more pages of Atlas Shrugged, dumbass.

59. my mail to Lou
Mr. Dobbs,

I never miss your program these days.

As a recent victim of the 'job loss' recovery, your honest reporting on the realities of the economy is of intense interest to me.

Tonight's confrontation with the hapless and repugnant Glassman was some of the best television I've ever seen.

Bless you, be well, and keep up the extraordinary work.
