Props to Bernard Weiner for the "Fog Of War" article this morning
I just saw "Fog of War" last weekend, and BW has done a great review of it that explains how important this movie is, with all its flaws. Go read! And go see the movie before it goes away.

6. Excellent piece! Consider this ...
In "Fog of War" - which opened recently nationwide - McNamara, in his mid-80s, speaks agonizingly of his moral culpability in World War II and later in Vietnam in the '60s and early-'70s.

McNamara agonizing! Fancy that. My heart bleeds. However ... how many DUers know about the attempted assassination of Robert Strange McNamara in the early 80s? It was a feature article in the Washington Post in about 1985. He was accosted on the Woods Hole-Martha's Vineyard ferry, and an attempt was made to throw him overboard in the icy March waters of that Atlantic passage. Good read if you can find it.

For that matter, how many know what RSM did in WW-2? What were he and his co-horts called? What was his party affiliation when JFK tapped him to Sec Def in 1961? (Hint: NOT a Democrat!).

8. The WWII stuff was actually the most interesting part of the film.
I had no idea what we'd done to Japan before we dropped the bomb. It seems to me like WWII actually bothered McNamara more, at least when he was talking about it, than his responsibility for Vietnam. Which is interesting consdering that WWII was a war that we at least had a real reason to fight, seeing as how we had actually been attacked.

Poignant and infuriating at the same time moments include: McNamara recounting his visit to Vietnam to meet with his adversary decades after the fact and have a chat about what was really going on, and getting into a fight with him about what the war was really about, during which the Vietnamese leader (I forget his name, shame on me) says, "Mr. McNamara, you must never have read a history book." Well, McNamara probably had; but you know THIS crowd hasn't.

Alas,

The Plaid Adder
