The Real Issue: Bush Is Incompetent
Fri Aug 27, 2:43 AM ET
By Richard Reeves

NEW YORK -- President Bush (news - web sites) is coming to town. You better watch out, you better not shout -- unless you're a certified delegate inside Madison Square Garden. With protesters somewhere out of sight, the Republican National Convention will be a celebration of the ideology, values and interests served by this second Bush presidency

Whether you agree or disagree with the words pouring from the podium over Americans who see reflections of themselves in George W. Bush, the real issue of this election will not be mentioned. The core issue is this: Our president is incompetent. He is not a good president.

Let me count the ways:

2. Reeves is a powerhouse. Where's the book Richard?
In 1975, Reeves made the leap from newspaper to books with the publication of A Ford, not a Lincoln. His President Kennedy: Profile of Power is now considered the authoritative work on the 35th president, has won several national awards and was named the Best Non-Fiction Book of 1993 by Time and Book of the Year by Washington Monthly.

"Richard Reeves is an author and syndicated columnist whose weekly column has appeared since 1979 in over 100 newspapers, and is read around the world. He has received a number of awards for his work in print, television and film, and for his contributions to journalism."

3. This Reeves' piece, along with the Seattle Times endorsement

are two of the most damning things I've read against Bush. Conservative people are joining in this chorus of complaints about Bush's inability to handle the job.

Competence is, to me, the best issue we have. The debates (or lack of them) should drive that home if Kerry is as sharp as we are led to believe. As a former prosecutor, I imagine he is.

You aren't hearing a whole lot of the "Bush is really shrewd, playing the dumbass!" But, you know, you would think that if is true, if this has all been a feigned slothfulness and apparent stupidity and he is truly a sharp political thinker, they you'd think this is the time to let the real Shrub shine.

Reality is he is frightening people who think the man is indeed stupid, and they voted for him. Never was an issue with Clinton, nor with Gore, you knew they were bright enough and informed enough. Major concern that Bush's (and his advisors who have also shown incompetence) errors could just send the world economy down the toilet, and set off a Middle Eastern regional war, with spinoff action throughout the Thirld World and ongoing terrorist war in the streets of Europe and the US.

These people's lack of competence, Bush's clear lack of the essentials of office, these are crystal clear and I think are my best hope that Kerry should win comfortably on Nov 2.

4. Much as I dislike Reeves, I agree: Competence is our most powerful issue.
I'm kind of amazed Reeves was actually able to reason this thru.

6. A factual piece.
After hearing Dumbass several times unscripted it was obvious that he has brain function deficits. He is not fit to be the Pres. of the USA. Had it not been for his family and all of their wealth, power and connections he would not have been Governor, much less Pres. It is doubtful that he could manage a fast food joint without bankrupting it. This person is an emberassment for America.

8. Why does a man with his money
always look like a kid in his father's shirt and tie? The shirts are too big on him and the tie accentuates this.
