Food: How to fix a "broken" supply system
Published on Jun 1, 2011 - 7:51:46 AM

"Reduce bureaucratic red tape and investment restrictions"

" Diffusion of genetically modified crop varieties: Help low and middle-income countries enact appropriate bio-safety standards to expand the use of genetically modified (GM) varieties"

" Spending on girls' education, which has a direct bearing on food security."

Three "experts" and all agree that government needs to get out of the way and that genetically modified foods are the "silver bullet" that will solve all of our food worries in the coming decades. What we'll end up with is mega-corporations pushing out the smaller growers, less diversity/far higher prone to devastation by disease, GM crops cross-breeding with local flora producing unknown consequences. It's a recipe for disaster!

5. Nah.
If you don't pick them in time you wind up having worms attack the stuff.

I'd like an egg tree. Granted, they'd smell if they got overripe, but otherwise it would be handy. I just wouldn't want to be under it if a sudden gust of wind came along.

Woosh. Splat.

2. "...recipe for disaster!" That's an insult to any natural disaster
It's not a disaster - it's a tragedy. It's completely predetermined from capitalist principles, and all we can do is watch the karmic machinery play out like a Greek play.

3. No, don't watch
It's so much more depressing if you watch the tragedy unfold in slo-mo.

I prefer to hide like a hermit and hope it'll all go away.

4. Anyone remember when chemical fertilizers and pesticides were the answer to the
world's food production 'problems'?

It's all about industrialized agriculture under the aegis of Monsanto and Cargill and a few others.

6. It was called "the green revolution" - the revolution was an attack on clean water and small farms
Worse still are the patents Monsanto et. al. have on the seeds of GM crops. If you are a farmer or a gardener you cannot even plant last year's seeds. You have to purchase "new" seeds each year.
