Microsoft offers students a free Xbox with new Windows 7 PCs
NETWORKWORLD - By Microsoft Subnet on Tue, 05/24/11 - 6:58pm.

Microsoft offers students a free Xbox with new Windows 7 PCs
For PCs costing $699 or more, college students can score a free Xbox 360 console

If you are about to plunk down some cash for a new Windows 7 PC for your college studies, you may be able to score a free Xbox with that purchase. Microsoft is giving away a free Xbox 360 4GB console with the purchase of a Windows 7 PC $699 or more beginning this week through September 3, or until it determines that supplies have run out.

The offer requires that the purchaser provide verification of college student status by either purchasing the machine by using an e-mail with an ".edu" address or by showing a student id at participating retailers. Online participating retailers include Dell.com, HP.com (beginning May 26) or the Microsoft Store.

1. a computer for $699?
I don't think most students spend that. Also, on a tech blog I read, I heard a Microsoft executive let it slip that Windows 8 is coming.

What is the Xbox worth? Even at the high price, it might still be a deal.

Personally, however, it is my goal to never spend any more money with Microsoft. I am put off by their paranoid protection of their copyright, which, even though I own them legally, have cost me a great deal of inconvenience. Best to just get rid of them.

2. Are you kidding me?
I just bought a new laptop for school next semester on sunday. Why does it always seem like the good deals start right after I buy something?

4. You should call the retailer...
see if they will honor the promotion.

Maybe you could even state that you will return it and order it through a different retailer if they don't want to assist you.

3. .edu email addresses?
Sounds to me like some profs are going to go shopping for their bratty kids.

Seriously, companies shouldn't discriminate in promotions. I know some grandparents that wouldn't think twice about that deal. A new PC for them and a built in gift for a grandkid. Or keep the xbox and have an enticement to get all the grandkids to visit.
