The newest fear-mongering campaign from the Right and the media
Glen Greenwald
Salon.com
1-24-2009

The latest fear-mongering campaign in the U.S. -- this one devoted to scaring Americans that they will be slaughtered if Guantanamo is closed and Terrorism suspects are brought into the U.S. for real trials -- is now in full swing. The New York Times today prints a front-page article, based entirely on an anonymous source, claiming that a detainee released from Guantanamo last year has now become "the deputy leader of Al Qaeda’s Yemeni branch" (it's always amazing how bureaucratically structured Al Qaeda is alleged to be and how well we can discern the structure: "Deputy Leader, Yemen Branch"; do they have business cards and organizational charts?).

1. RWers are now relegated to 'background noise'.

Without the presidential bully-pulpit, they are little more than court jesters.

2. Did you see Kit Bond on Hardball yesterday?
He has already started hitting the sauce to deal with his fear.

4. I'm pretty confident that President Obama will continue to travel
the high road, and as long as he can do that, the rw wacko stuff should finally fade. Unfortunately, if members of congress take the bait, or make quips that could be taken personally or as a partisan swipe (ala Biden), the rhetoric and bullshit will continue.

7. I noticed that Brian Williams started off the Nightly News with that last night.

I was aghast (even though I know he's a tool).

They're just bringin' 'em here so we don't have to fight 'em over there. Geez, you'd think all the MSM "patriots" who supported the war wouldn't mind so much.

I've been deleting Nightly News off the DVR without watching a lot lately. Guess the subtle (and not-so-subtle) attacks on the Dems are getting to me. Lehrer pisses me off every now and then, but certainly not with every show.

8. There are probably twenty or more other things
that will slaughter them sooner than foreign "terrorists" will...

Like heart disease, fast food, cigarettes, alcohol, obesity, bad drivers, accidents in and around their own homes, lightning, air pollution, chemicals in the water and food, etc.

10. so, why isn't the source of the article in prison?
Surely, he has connections to terrorists, since he apparently knows the inner workings of al Qaeda ...

13. Now let's be fair: it's not just an anonymous source but an anonymous source
who says it's based on something somebody saw on the internet
