Did the out-going president or his speech writer ever consider how that would sound to a world well acquainted with the administration's policies of locking up suspected terrorists for years without trial, for using torture on some to abstract information and for remanding others to foreign lands where there are no compunctions about using physical abuse as an interrogation method? ...

”Iraq has gone from a brutal dictatorship and a sworn enemy of America to an Arab democracy at the heart of the Middle East and a friend of the United States,” President Bush told the nation, his rose-colored glasses unseen.

There is a long way to go before staking any legitimate claim to “an Arab democracy at the heart of the Middle East.” As for our new Iraq friends, they appear ready to show us the door as soon as possible ...
