Andrew Sullivan: "War Declared on Gays"
WAR IS DECLARED: The president launched a war today against the civil rights of gay citizens and their families. And just as importantly, he launched a war to defile the most sacred document in the land. Rather than allow the contentious and difficult issue of equal marriage rights to be fought over in the states, rather than let politics and the law take their course, rather than keep the Constitution out of the culture wars, this president wants to drag the very founding document into his re-election campaign. He is proposing to remove civil rights from one group of American citizens - and do so in the Constitution itself. The message could not be plainer: these citizens do not fully belong in America. Their relationships must be stigmatized in the very Constitution itself. The document that should be uniting the country will now be used to divide it, to single out a group of people for discrimination itself, and to do so for narrow electoral purposes. Not since the horrifying legacy of Constitutional racial discrimination in this country has such a goal been even thought of, let alone pursued. Those of us who supported this president in 2000, who have backed him whole-heartedly during the war, who have endured scorn from our peers as a result, who trusted that this president was indeed a uniter rather than a divider, now know the truth.

Sullivan is a conservative, but he's an honest, thoughtful one. I visit his site every day and have a great deal of respect for him. This was probably the last straw for him and the Republican party and probably many other gay Republicans as well.

1. Yeah....we'll see.....
Something tells me he's just ranting and raving now. But I would bet good money that his "active campaigning against *" will have as much honestly borne out of it as the "if we dont' find WMD's I won't trust them again" group. When it comes down to it they will still pull the voting booth lever for you know who.

3. Sullivan is a gay man
And I think he really trusted Bush to, at the very least, leave him and other homosexuals alone. By this action, Bush has proven that he puts partisanship and pandering above the rights of American citizens. That cuts him to his conservative heart, and is a betrayal that he will not tolerate.

about Smirk. He is genuinely hurt and "surprised" ( :eyes: ) that bush would go this.

5. Well, I hope he is a man of his word....
I just know too many conservatives who bring out the self righteous indignation when its in the abstract but when it comes time to actually act on their disgust and dissapointment, simply fall back into their traps.

12. He is surprised and hurt
by Bush's support disgusting support of discrimination against gay people. I believe it, but I do not understand how he could by surprised.

I would have been surprised if Smirk had not supported a constitutional amendment against gay marriage. How could anyone have thought otherwise?

7. Chimpy is YOUR boy, Sully!

YOU shilled and whored for him right up to this point. You KNEW he felt this way and would do anything to pander to his fundie whacko base.

He's YOUR hero, Sully. Live with it.

20. You mean ya didn't KNOW?
I have NO sympathy at all. But since we need all the support we can get in this battle, welcome to the good side - finally. Now you get to fight on your own behalf, instead of the rest of us (so-called liberals) fighting for your rights while you fight against us.

8. I Have NO Respect For Sullivan
He's only NOW realizing how dangerous these scumbags are because they're doing something that effects him personally? He's a whore, plain and simple.

He's right on this and his arguments are spot on but he's still a douchebag as far as I'm concerned.

11. Well spoke.
Typical repig - he has no compassion for anyone else, but as soon as something directly effects HIM, then it's "war."

Disgusting shill/whore/a-hole/POS.

A collaborator, for as long as it was beneficial to him personally.

Welcome to the good side, though. But where ya been, dude? We could have used you on the front lines in 2000.

9. Well, like, duh, Andy. What did you expect?
Republicans who want to live in log cabins shouldn't be surprised to get splinters. Sullivan deserves a lot of credit, though, for forcefully crying out against the kind of reactionary gay-bashing that I'm sure that many, even on the right, must abhor. Doesn't seem to bother real hate-mongers like Drudge.

10. Bush burns down Republican Log Cabin
Pictures at eleven!

This is the * WH completely bowing to the Religious Right.

This is going to be a very divisive wedge issue among Republicans, and unite the Democratic party faithful. I suspect it will also swing a lot of undecided votes our way.

Shit, it might even get Mary Cheney off the fence.

Dumb and Dumberer.

14. I have no respect for Andrew Sullivan. However...
I have to say he has surprised me. I thought he was too deluded to *ever* wake up to "the truth," as he puts it, no matter what Bush did.

Well, I'm glad Andrew "now knows the truth." It's too bad it's taken him this fucking long to figure it out.

Yeesh,

The Plaid Adder

Take a hike. I hear the Log Cabin lemmings are all in a tizzy, you should waddle your fat ass over there Sully, and give them a shoulder to cry on. Oh, wait, you don't have a shoulder, your neck goes right to your arms.

He acts indignant, like this would not play out from the creature in the White House.

18. Sullivan acts just like a battered spouse.
He keeps going back to the GOP and the elephant stomps on him time and time again, yet he still goes back.

By the time Bush steals another election and installs Christian Reconstruction, it will be too late. Andy will be marched into a re-education camp and he'll be wearing that pink triangle.

It's too late for you, Andy!

Ya think he might head back to Albion where he could sign the London Partnership Registry set up (of course) under the city's leftist municipal leadership?

Silly, silly, Sullivan!

22. just checked out his current blog... already back to hailing
bush and the war on terrorism... Does anyone really think that Sullivan is going to stay against the president for long... looks like he is already reverting back to give kudos to bush and bush's policies. Sure he may vent a bit more in the future - but I don't expect it to be meaningful in the longterm.

Might be interesting to watch... each time he vents about the amendment... how long it will be before he is back to lauding the glorious policies of the juniorbush.

27. he needs to ask himself this:
why is it that almost everyone who is in favor of ending institutionalized discrimination against gays and lesbians is a leftist? why does one do highly correlate with other unrepublican policies? if leftists are right on this issue, and he agrees that they are, then he should ask *why* they got this one right.

it's not just a fluke that leftists are for gay marriage, andy. it's not pandering to the electorate. most of the electorate opposes it, probably even among the Democratic party. if and when you finally have the right to marry your partner freely, like heterosexuals do, you will owe *us* for it. as you already owe us, the leftists you despise, for every single day you can be an openly gay man in america.

28. No kidding it's war, Andy...
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 01:53 PM by asthmaticeog
But where was your concern when the party for which you've shamelessly shilled began its war on the standard of living of the poor and middle-class? Where was your concern when they began their war on the rights of the accused? On the right to reproductive choice? On the 1st and 4th amendments to our Constitution? On the civilian populations of Afghanistan and Iraq?

Screw you, Sullivan. It takes no courage for a pundit of your stature to speak out for your own interests after spending years professionally dismissing everyone else's. Start expressing that kind of concern for minority and disadvantaged populations to which you don't belong, and I'll consider listening. Until then, you've got nothing to say that I can take even slightly seriously.

Edit: toned down a bit of nastiness - gotta stay above the fray, don'tcha know!
