Washington, Apr 12, 2008 (EFE via COMTEX) -- -- The New York Times urged Democrats in Congress to set aside concerns about the plight of American workers in a struggling economy and to ratify the trade agreement with Colombia.
The accord "would benefit the American economy and further the nation's broader interests in Latin America (and) it is time for Congress to ratify it," the paper said in an editorial published Friday.
The trade deal also would strengthen ties between the United States and Colombia, "one of America's few allies in an important region that has become increasingly hostile to the United States' interests," referring to leftist governments in countries such as Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia that have frequently decried U.S. foreign policy.
The paper said that, although there is still far too much violence in Colombia, the number of trade unionists who have been killed has fallen in recent years while convictions of perpetrators of these slayings has risen during Colombian President Alvaro Uribe's administration.
