Mr. Bush's ill-fated "surge" is unraveling even faster than most observers expected. Rather than yielding tentative refuge from the sectarian storm -- during which peaceful negotiations would proceed, transforming the tentative into the lasting -- all hell is breaking loose.
Ten American soldiers dead, five wounded last weekend along with scores of murdered Iraqis, reports the New York Times. Then came lovable Moktada al-Sadr's massive, organized protest against the American occupation that dwarfed any previous show of, to understate things, discontent.
"He exhorted Iraqi security forces on Sunday to unite with his militiamen against the American military in Diwaniya, an embattled southern city in Iraq where fighting has raged for four days."
If we want to see how fast those stubbornly untrainable Iraqi security forces can indeed be trained, I have a feeling Sadr's militia will show us -- in a Bagdhad minute.
