MSNBC's Carlson: Gore is a "zealot," a "bible-thumper," a "wild-eyed religious nut" whose "religion is the environment"

On the May 31 edition of MSNBC's The Situation, host Tucker Carlson described former Vice President Al Gore as a "zealot" and a "bible-thumper," referring to his long-standing position on the threat posed by global warming and his new documentary on the topic, An Inconvenient Truth (Paramount Classics, May 2006). Carlson went on to say, "He's a wild-eyed religious nut. And his religion is the environment."

Numerous right-wing pundits have previously characterized Gore as mentally unstable or "insane" as Media Matters for America has documented. Ann Coulter has called Gore "clinically insane"; and syndicated columnist Kathleen Parker described Gore as being "one slice short of a loaf," though she subsequently told MSNBC's Chris Matthews that she wouldn't "go quite that far" in saying Gore "has lost it." Matthews himself said that Gore developed "a psychological problem" after his defeat in the 2000 presidential election.

From the May 31 edition of MSNBC's The Situation with Tucker Carlson:

instead of the usual brand of zealot that deals in fear and hate.
On edit, from what I have seen of Tucker Carlson, he is probably the dumbest of an incredible large and stupid group collectively know as "the media". Only someone without a bit of a brain would consider anything Tucker Carlson has to say of any importance. That includes his audience that must number in the dozen.

7. Excellent point
We could use a few more policiticans and public figures like him who are as passionate about the environment as some Repubs are about trivia such as gay marriage and immigration.

At least in a hundred years they'd be remembered.

5. If anyone acts like a wild-eyed zealot it's Tucker Carlson.
Gore acts like a man who knows what he's talking about on the environment.

Tucker is so nervous his guests are going to get a clear shot at telling the truth that he cackles and jumps and spins on everything BEFOREHAND.

8. So, how was that Jon Stewart treatment,
huh _ucker?

Of course all those rw pundits are perfectly "normal" calling for the assassination of foreign leaders, force-conversion to christianity, and praying to their w idol.

11. As opposed to Bush, whose religion is destruction & war
Georgie dreams about nuking Iran. ("See, I'm a WAR president. I make decisions here in the Oval Office in foreign-policy matters with war on my mind.")

Gore dreams about preserving our world for future generations.

My vote for "wild-eyed religious nut" goes to George Dubya Bush.

much traction, eh?

So how much of a threat does a potential candidate have to be to merit the "insanity" treatment?

14. Ah, life with republicans: intelligence is labeled a mental disease.
Because obviously, only a mentally distrubed person would question the authoritative pronouncements of republicans.

What is this, the fucking 1950s under Red Scare where anyone with a book was assumed to be a communist?

This is why I've hated republicans since Reagan so much - every that is good about human nature they want to label a mental disease, or a social disorder, or something that needsto be "retrained", like being curious, thinking holistically, or not believing everything out of the mouth of a president, even the blatantly contradictory stuff.

21. I guess they are aware that most of us think they are religious zealots
on the right. Too bad they can't do anything to get rid of them. They are TRYING to send a message to the nutbags on their side that religious zealotry is a bad thing, but it is wishful projection - as usual.

24. Has his devotion to the environment ever caused him to kill 1000's
of people? *'s religion made him lauch a pre-emptive war against a defenseless nation and in so doing kill upwards of 250,000 people. Now, who's the nutty one again?

25. Pay attention to this. If Gore runs and it starts to look like he will win
You will not only hear more of this stuff from the likes of Coulter, Carlson, Matthews, et al, you will start to hear some of the clerical right (Falwell, Dobson) imply and then outright say that Gore could be the Antichrist. I am not kidding.

26. If the wingnuts think he's crazy that's a good sign he's not.
I don't think having passion about something as important as the environment is crazy.

The crazy thing is not being passionate about it.

27. Tucker is a little confused
Environmental science is not a religion, but a well established science with all the usual sciency stuff like evidence and peer review publication requirements. Odd he would denigrate the real religious zealots, which tend to play on the republican side of the fence, but logic and consistency is not a republican hallmark.
