Couple Arrested For Asking For Directions

POSTED: 7:23 am EDT May 17, 2006
UPDATED: 10:52 am EDT May 17, 2006

BALTIMORE -- Baltimore City police arrested a Virginia couple over the weekend after they asked an officer for directions.

WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team reporter David Collins said Joshua Kelly and Llara Brook, of Chantilly, Va., got lost leaving an Orioles game on Saturday. Collins reported a city officer arrested them for trespassing on a public street while they were asking for directions .

"In jail for eight hours -- sleeping on a concrete floor next to a toilet," Kelly said.

"It was a nightmare," Brook said. "I was in there thinking I was just dreaming and waiting to wake up."

Collins reported it was a nightmare ending to a nearly perfect day. He said the couple went to a company picnic and watched the Orioles beat Kansas City. It was their first trip to Camden Yards and asked two people for directions to Interstate 95 South when they left.

Collins said somehow they ended up in the Cherry Hill section of south Baltimore. Hopelessly lost, relief melted away concerns after they spotted a police vehicle.

"I said, 'Thank goodness, could you please get us to 95?" Kelly said.

"The first thing that she said to us was no -- you just ran that stop sign, pull over," Brook said. "It wasn't a big deal. We'll pay the stop sign violation, but can we have directions?"

"What she said was 'You found your own way in here, you can find your own way out.'" Kelly said.

Collins said the couple spotted another police vehicle and flagged that officer down for directions. But Officer Natalie Preston, a six-year veteran of the force, intervened.

Police officers are public servants -- not the fucking Gestapo!

There are too many GOOD men and women who would professionally perform the duties of a police officer. Ones like the officer in this OP should be quickly identified and booted from the force (no ands, ifs, or buts about it).

15. If this officer is not removed for her behavior
then yes, Cultish might be a good description. Because then it would appear, to me anyways, that the entire department condones such behavior by its officers.

19. well, could be, the LDSers have infiltrated Utah+other states
police depts, fire, public services, et al...and if they pull weird stuff or blatant violations toward the public they are rarely, if ever, reprimanded, put on leave or fired because people fear the group's retribution (like Scientology's rep). LATimes
had a major report on how much infiltration has occured-they cast the threat of retaliation if they are opposed. America is a major strange and scary place right now-we've always had cults, but that kind of behavior seems pervasive in the WH-this 'borg like' influence permeates the body politic. Bush&Co call it 'religion'(so it HAS to be GOOD, right?!), I call them cultists of the first order.

26. What kind of retribution or retaliation...?
In the real world if a person can't handle the job, they can't keep it, either.

Slightly of topic --- how on earth can anyone be arrested for "trespassing" on PUBLIC LAND (as opposed to PRIVATE PROPERTY).

Inquiring minds want to know.

11. Nice welcome to visitors! Baltimore's been trying to revamp itself
the last decade or more as a great place to visit---This won't help! And with Brooks' parents being cops, they won't let go of the issue.

I hope that police woman gets fired. Normally I would think a warning would suffice, but I have never heard of anything like this.

18. i think we all know how this will play out..
Officer placed on desk duty or paid administrative leave while an "internal investigation" is conducted eventually exonerating the officer of any wrongdoing.

20. They best watch thier P's and Q's
Lest they find themselves a KO "Worst Person in the World" candidates.

If I had a KO address handy and not so busy I'd send it over myself.

IMHO It's not important they didn't charge them with tresspassing. They arrested and jailed them.

23. That is ridiculous
Those officers deserve a suspension or worse.

Being a police officer requires you to protect and serve citizens not arrest them for no valid reason.

24. I just spent a weekend in Baltimore
and I found it to be a less friendly place than NYC. That shocked me.

I live in NYC, and I expect rude people here. It's part of the city's atmosphere and reputation. But Baltimore? What the hell has Baltimore got to offer to justify that kind of bad attitude?
