Scaife's Rag: Lily-livered weasels (Yahoo etc for giving Feds records)
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review/opinion/archive/s_416321.html

We've just had it up to our eye sockets with the Bush administration's crusades against privacy. Its attack on the Oregon assisted-suicide act -- the law was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court -- asserted a species of government ownership of every citizen's body.

Now, the Justice Department is trying to compel Google, the No. 1 Internet search engine in the United States, to turn over records so feds in Puritan hats may find out how often children can get into porn sites. The data submitted would not personally identify the user, we are told.

This is not a criminal investigation, but is an effort, the federal government says, to bolster its case for the Child Online Protection Act, whose enforcement is suspended. The U.S. Supreme Court declared the law problematic in 2004 and returned the case to a lower court for a determination of its constitutionality.

<snip>

Do the Feds think the public is stupid? How can they tell if it's Curious Georgette or Dirty Daddy doing the looking?

2. The Have-Mores Hate Being Spied Upon
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 12:37 PM by AndyTiedye
This might be the only thing that could bring them down.

The corporate elite have nighmares about their better-connected competitors are getting access to their corporate data.
As well they should.

The idea that "anybody who has nothing wrong has nothing to hide" is for the plebes.
Anybody who has ever run a business knows better.
Even the most honest businessman has plenty to hide from his competitors.

If we hammer on the spying, and their likely abuse of it for commerical advantage, we can get Bush**'s own base, his real base, to turn on him.

4. If the government's stated purpose
is to find out how often children can get into porn sites -- how is that possible without identifying USERS?
