Horse sex story was online hit
By Danny Westneat
Seattle Times staff columnist

As I look back at the year in news, it's clear I should have focused more on people having sex with horses.

That's the conclusion I reach after reviewing a new list of the year's top local news stories. Only this list is not the usual tedious recounting by news editors or pundits who profess to speak for you readers. This is the people's-choice list.

So much so, a case can be made that the articles on horse sex are the most widely read material this paper has published in its 109-year history.

I don't know whether to ignore this alarming factoid or to embrace it.

It's not just the horse sex. The rest of the top 20 people's-choice list is eye-opening, as well.

1. LOL, well I read his story
so he will have a mouse click from me for his horse sex story.
It's too bad, and I'm sure his articles about public transportation in Seattle are riveting. :-)

2. He'll have one from me too, as I must have missed the story
earlier...

So now, I have questions I'd prefer not to have or even have contemplated, but I will throw out one. Why a stallion (rather than a mare)? I have limited imagination, I guess, but seems a stallion would be more likely to hurt you.

3. Results skewed by FARQ is my guess.
Less about local interest, more about the viral nature of the internet. Seems to me that Drew featured this story when it happened. That's good for an extra 100,000 hits, just in the first hour.

Someone should write the poor guy and clue him in.

4. Freepers were reading that story
that link was on Freepville...no wonder it got the highest traffic. Freepers love to read stories involving unusual sex and then gloat how "normal" their sexual acts are.

5. Also, consider dilution
There was only 1 horse sex story, etc- while there were tons of stories on significant issues.

A load of horsehit designed to reinforce vacuous local "news" style coverage is what this article is.

6. Holy Catherine the Great Batman!
So the top story in this paper was about a guy who died of a perforated colon while being buggered by a horse.

Why am I not suprised.
