Monkey Business
http://www.newyorkpress.com/18/22/news&columns/taibbi.cfm

The topic for my column this week is religious conservatives. There are a few reasons for this. The 80th anniversary of the Scopes Monkey trial is approaching, for one. For another, the city of Dover, Pennsylvania, has just approved the teaching of "intelligent design"—the latest semantic end-around for use in questioning Darwinism. But the real reason to talk about religious conservatives is because the last few months have been something of a coming-out party for them as a mainstream political force.

Worth the read

1. Here's a coincidence...

...I just read this smae article after visiting the New York Press site and was going to post it here when I saw the headline of this thread.

It really does speak some truths about America. My parents and I emigrated to this country many years ago. My father chose America only after he found out he would have to wait two years for his first choice, West Germany. All in all, things were mostly good till now. However, seeing how kooky this country is becoming (and probably always was, it's just more out in the open these days), including its addiction to superstition/religious fundamentalism, is making my folks think that maybe they should have endured the wait for Germany, after all. I'm kind of wishing they had, as well.

Everything I see and can sense about what is going on makes me think the author is right. This disease called religious fundamentalism that ails America will not go away any time soon. At their core, most homegrown Americans seem to be complacent, backward, and ignorant people, unfortunately.
