When we watch a decade of television, it's time for direct action
T.S. Eliot once said that "television is a medium of entertainment which permits millions of people to listen to the same joke at the same time, and yet remain lonesome." He is not the only one who thinks so.

A group of anti-TV guerrillas, as scathing as the poet about the influence of the small screen on society, yesterday started to "liberate" people from its irresistible grip. They are using a recently launched gizmo called TV-B-Gone to take direct action against television sets in public places.

The glorified remote control, about the size of a key ring, will switch off most television sets within a 14m radius within 60 seconds.

The device will form the focus of TV-Turnoff Week, an annual protest against television's all-pervasive influence, which began in the US 11 years ago. Organized by the TV-Turnoff Network, White Dot and anti-consumerism group AdBusters, the protest has steadily spread to other countries, including Canada and the UK.

3. Remember Max Headroom? Tvs were everywhere, illegal to turn them off.
I admit it, I would love this device.

4. No TV for three years now
It was stolen in a burglary in 2002, and we never replaced it.

It is the best thing we have ever done for ourselves. The change this has wrought in our lives is immense and gratifying.

Our friends think we're kooks. Of course, the feeling is mutual.
