Leaders in Washington owe it to the nation to fight the growing menace to the independence and even the personal safety of federal judges.
Unfortunately, key Republican members of Congress are siding with interest groups whose strategy is to turn judicial selection into some sort of religious crusade.
Opposition to up to a dozen Bush nominees has nothing to do with the judges' religious views. Objections to nominee William G. Myers III, for example, center on his environmental rulings. Nominee William J. Haynes II signed a memo that appeared to justify torture of war prisoners.
Bush could also distance himself from those who seek to make judicial nominations a religious cause. That's unhealthy for America, and the president should say so.
