Liberal Oasis: The Shiavo case one big disaster for the right
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 12:33 PM by ginnyinWI
in today's editorial:

"To translate: the base has become cocky and demanding, and forced the Congress to do something that is alienating the rest of the country.

The base had been smarter about playing their cards the last few years, but now they’re foolishly throwing elbows and causing internal rifts.

They’ve not only set back the "culture of life" cause by choosing a bad vehicle to try to persuade the country with, they’re weakening their own political coalition that gives them any influence at all.

All in all, the attempt to exploit Terri has been one big disaster for the Right."

2. Never underestimate the stupidity on the right
Although they are angry at all the government interference in this particular case, they'll also give Stupid and Jebbie high marks for being "on the side of life."

3. You're right. ShrubCo gave them the indication that they would
make anything happen for them, and since most people don't seem to understand that there are limitations to anyone's abilities...even if we did have an idiot King! They are responding to this like spoiled children, who believe Mommy & Daddy can do anything, and they didn't do this for ME!

I appo;ogize to the children. Actually most children are smarter than these adults!

4. I do know ....
That I ran into a few 'newbies' here at DU the last few days who came over from the 'Dark Side' because of this issue. Stating they pretty much had it with the so called 'holier than thou' right wing coalition.
So let it continue as far as I am concerned, the foot in mouth disease Republican party looses on more points here than they had hoped to gain IMHO as it plays out. More people paid attention to this issue in the last week than any other, and as the TRUTH comes out .... it drives people to our side. Now if we could only get more people to pay attention to OTHER ISSUES this intently .... they might see the TRUTH on those things too .... ? Gotta get their attention and keep pounding the TRUTH down their throats. :)

5. Welcome to DU, doublethink
From now on you shouldn't have to think twice.

The Global Occupation Party was assimilated long ago by the American Taliban and now it's becoming increasingly clear that they do not represent the majority viewpoint.

We'll see what Howard Dean can articulate that will sway more moderates and independents to our side, but for now, simply peeling away from the Party of Intrusion works for me.

Pass along my welcome to those others you mention.

6. Global Occupation Party?
I'm gonna steal that one.

It's better than my usual Gasbags On Powertrips and the hopeful Going Outta Power.

7. Whenever the Repukes can bring us newbies it is a good thing and I am so
glad this is blowing up in their face. Let's get back to slamming the King on his Social Security fiasco.

9. I would be more than happy to reach across the aisle, myself
I know that of the ~51% who voted for Bush, there are plenty who held their noses in doing so. One of the reasons they held their noses was because they are principled conservatives who devoutly believe in limited government.

You simply cannot get any more intrusive into people's personal lives than Jethro, Chimpy and Bugman have proposed doing in this case. I think it's made things crystal clear for some that these "Republicans" are nothing more than cheezy opportunists who'll turn their ideology on a dime to suit a constituency's whim.

I can talk to those folks, I won't call their party nasty names, I'll listen to what they have to say. They're not criminals, they're decent people who want this country to thrive. I know several myself who fit that category and I've always tried to keep the lines of communication open.

Anyway, to any/all lurking here wondering if by "reThug" we're talking about YOU--no. We're not. Not most of us anyway. We're talking about the poor excuse for leadership currently running the legislative and executive branchs of the federal government.

12. This is the reason that I don't use bad names for republicans
Edited on Fri Mar-25-05 01:25 PM by ginnyinWI
I want them to come over to our side and see us as good people. I always say "repubs" because it is shorter and neutral. I choose to not alienate a likely convert, rather than to get my jollies by venting with angry names.
Of course I don't mind calling * by nicknames. He deserves it. And after all, he loves them so! But I don't resort to obscenity--again because I want to represent the good guys and I think it makes us look too juvenile.

13. I too am a former GOP'er
Switched two years ago when I couldn't stand it any more. I am a thinking man, fer crying out loud. I don't always agree, occasionally get flamed, but am always welcomed.

15. I switched in 1992 during the election
I couldn't take Poppy Bush anymore, and voted for Clinton. And I've feel better since! :) So many repubs are just like me--raised as a repub and trained to be suspicious of Democrats. Back then it was the fear that Dems would raise our taxes and be weak on defense. I guess those are the things that they still use against us in some form or other.

14. I agree. I want my sane Republicans back!
I never thought I'd say that. I only hope they can recapture their party from the fundies and the corporations. And Democrats are having similar problems with the DLC, sad to say. It's all up to the grassroot Americans who just want some common sense in government for once.
