New virus sounds phishy
Poses as notice of a $175 credit card charge By Bob Sullivan
Technology correspondent
MSNBC
Updated: 8:16 p.m. ET Nov. 10, 2004A new computer virus that lures victims the same way phishing e-mails do is on the loose, antivirus firms say. Potential victims get an e-mail saying their credit card has been charged $175 by PayPal, and are urged to click on a link for details. But following the link will cause the consumer's computer to become infected.

Other variations offer a peek at potentially pornographic material, or claim to be from someone looking for new friends; they, too, urge recipients to click on a link.

The virus -- called a MyDoom variant by some researchers, and "Bofra" by others -- also takes advantage of a brand-new vulnerability in Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Microsoft has yet to produce a patch for the flaw, making the virus potentially dangerous. However, it's not spreading dramatically, according to antivirus firms. Symantec Corp. has only seen reports of 29 infections, according to Oliver Friedrichs, senior manager of the firm's security response team.

4. Does FireFox work on SSL connections for you?
I cannot get it to do secure services through my firewall, but IE and Mozilla 1.3 both work fine. All later versions of Mozilla and Firefox just spin and return nothing when trying to connect to an https: url.

I brought it up with the developers and they deny it does that. I've tested this on several machines at several client locations, through three different firewalls, all with identical results. No access to SSL connections.

What's your experience?

5. I was having that problem
about a month ago - was using Opera 6.01 - I updated to Opera 7.54 and all my problems are solved :D

you can get a free download here www.opera.com/download/

It is easily customizable (make the toolbars any way you want - has great extra tools in the panels and I am only sorry I didn't update sooner.

6. Does Opera still have the onClick and onChange problems?
These used to piss me off when I do my banking online as they don't support the WC3 specifications fully. If they've fixed that, I'll try Opera once more as I liked it other than that major flaw.

7. am not sure what "onClick" and onChange" mean
can you be more specific?

I use it for online banking and have no problems at all now (did with Opera 6.01) - but have been using Opera for 3+ years and this one (7.54) is just an improvement overall.

It's fast - not bulky - my computer is running better and fewer hitches (did add SpyBot and SpyWareBlaster) but used to have some RAM problems - all gone now.

the Pop-Up blocker is much more selective (only getting the ones you need to get (no ads) but the form fill-ins so you don't have to make the "preference" change anymore.

If you can explain to me (like you would to a child) I could probably answer your question better.

:)

9. I can't be more specific, sorry.
My question was as specific as can be. I can be more general - these are events that happen when you enter a field or change a field of data. A lot of systems use these events to trigger calculations and Opera did not support them the last time I checked. There are also other JavaScript issues that they did not support too, but these two are the most egregious ommissions as they are used all over the net.

I guess the only way I'll find out is to try it once more and see how it works. Thanks for trying anyway :)

12. Under the tools/advanced/options menu
in Firefox are checkmarks for using SSL2.0, 3.0, and TSL encryption. Make sure these have not somehow become unchecked. I've never had a problem accessing HTTPS sites, but don't do a lot of money transactions apart from an occasional CD or DVD order. Never had a problem, so I suspect that you either have trhe prefs wrong or might be hitting some Internet Exploder only sites. Firefox has a plugin to launch IE in such cases, altho I haven't ever needed it (I've found other approaches), but it means you can use Firefox and still retain access to those sites that insist on IE.
