France, Germany Not Ready to Back U.S. Draft on Iraq
Thu September 4, 2003 10:09 AM ET

DRESDEN (Reuters) - French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said Thursday they were not ready to accept U.S. proposals that could lead to a new United Nations resolution on Iraq.

"We are ready to examine the proposals but they seem quite far from what appears to us the primary objective, namely the transfer of political responsibility to an Iraqi government as soon as possible," Chirac told a joint news conference.

4. "falls short" of what?
Edited on Thu Sep-04-03 09:19 AM by Aidoneus
does that imply that there are conditions to their end, where they would consider endorsing this failing adventure after all? obviously the US wants some PR-relief from the "irrelevant UN" while still maintaining domination of the thing anyway (as per statements referring to exactly that from officials), but it seems to me that "falls short"/"not good enough" implies that it could be "good enough" and that their opposition is negotiable..

11. Exactly they are playing W&Co. for $$$$$$$$$$$
The only thing they understand and the underlying reason for this the greatest heist in world history. Not that W&Co. are any good with money at least not yours.

The want a cut. That is what all this "administrative control" talk is codespeak for.

You can pay me now (Feb/March of this year) or you can pay me later (now) and if you pay later you pay more. W should have taken the first offer but then he never has been a very good businessman.

22. The principles are not negotiable.
But I think UN, Germany, Russia, France and many countries will allow Bush to save face. To humiliate the USA would be politically stupid.

20. It is the art of negotiation
you first offer something that you absolutely know they will not concede to. then they counter to something you won't concede to and you usually meet somewhere in the middle. I hope there are no middle ground offerings for these freakin satanists.

7. well what a surprise..NOT
in the meantime, Rummy is running for cover, and more soldiers die daily..
anyone of us KNEW what was going to happen in Iraq if we invaded, but the assholes in the WH called us a focus group and dismissed millions all over the world who said NO WAR to Bush admin..
Now, they are trying to save face by begging the UN for help, but on their terms ...and the UN says HUH???????????????
Powell just needs to say one thing...let the UN run the show, and
"The anti war activists were right...we were wrong....we beg the UN to take over, and we apologize for our murderous pre emptive strike"

Then Bush and Co should resign and be tried as war criminals..

I can dream..................

9. Vive La France
Of course they are rejecting this fig-leaf propoasal!

What the Bush* regime is proposing is paying lipservice to UN control but de facto leaving things the way they are. What amazes me is that even these morons would think that the "chocolate makers" will fall for this especialy after all the insults from the like of Eidechsekönig von Dumbsfeld and also that this fig leaf would be sufficent incentive for other countries to provide cannon fodder for the US occupation of Iraq.

13. In spite of France and Germany
and lukewarm to cold to freezing support for this administrations' imperialism, you can count on one thing...MSNBC will find a focus group who will do the cabal's bidding to lead 20 second news gatherers. Twenty seconds - the amount of time they can focus based on mind absorbing thoughts and planning on how to get the bills paid, keep their job, help with schoolwork, get the car fixed, accomplish their schedules of chauferring and showing up on time for everything.

There are millions of people who don't know what NBC has become.

France and Germany haters will prevail because we have way too much to deal with to take the time to defend them.

Payola or not...the rest of the world is not with us anymore...maybe some newly rich leaders.

Anyway - love of America? Poof! Gone! with our Supremem Court and the magnificent efforts of the cabal.

President Worst - Cabal Worst.

15. is there something more devious here?
Powell was depicted in the Wash Post yesterday--Dana Milbank's piece--as marching into the Oval Office and demanding Bush go to the UN for help. Since when does the Sec of State describe such meetings with the President in blow-by-blow fashion to the press? Something's amiss. I'm wondering if Colin Powell isn't being set up for a fall by the neo-cons, as the guy who demanded we turn to the UN but who fell on his face because the chocolate-makers wouldn't go along. Something's really rotten in the state of Washington, DC!

16. Did anybody say "Old Europe?"
And what do you want to bet that there are still restaurants that are proudly advertising their "freedom fries?"

How can AWOL's poll numbers still be as high as they are? Has half of this country been marrying their first cousins for the past five generations?

26. A defining characteristic of this administration
is the utter failure, if not complete disregard for, diplomacy. They are corporate bosses used to getting their way. They thought they could throw the weight of the US military around and get what they wanted. Their policies have disabled former alliances and weakened the position of the US in the world.
The UN needs to wait out this administration. The Bush cabal is the greatest threat to world peace since the Cold War.
