Bush nominees who oppose abortion will get fair hearing, says Specter
Bush nominees who oppose abortion will get fair hearing, says Specter
JENNIFER C. KERR, Associated Press Writer

Sunday, November 7, 2004

(11-07) 11:50 PST WASHINGTON (AP) --

Insisting he has no litmus test, the Republican in line to head the Senate Judiciary Committee pledged Sunday not to stall President Bush's judicial nominees, even if the prospective judges oppose abortion rights.

The White House expressed confidence its choices would get a fair hearing.

Sen. Arlen Specter, a moderate from Pennsylvania who backs abortion rights, said he has supported judicial nominees in the past who do not agree with the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion.

"The fact is that I have supported all of President Bush's nominees in committee and on the floor. I have never applied a litmus test," Specter said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

1. Yeah, thanks, Arlen. And I'm sure there won't be any who support
it. A real "win, win" situation for the American Taliban.

2. OK, is he pandering to get in good with the zealots of the administration
or is he just trying to do one thing at a time and get the chairmanship first?

I am not a fan of Specter's but if we have to have a republican chairing that committee I would rather it be him then someone like Santorum.

3. Yeah, and if anyone believes that,
I have some ocean view property in Arizona for sale. You probably believe the election was on the level, too. Note to freepers: Your time will come, and it's not as far away as you and your mentally challenged fellow kool aid drinkers would like to think. As someone else on DU said: The backlash cometh.

4. Different Headline: Rove: Specter Vows Fairness for Nominees
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Republican in line to chair the Senate Judiciary Committee pledged Sunday not to stall anti-abortion judicial nominees that President Bush might nominate. The White House expressed confidence its nominees would get a fair hearing.

I have never applied a litmus test," Specter told CBS'"Face the Nation."

He added: "Although I am pro-choice, I have supported many pro-life nominees."<snip>

9. No abortion, no siree,
UNLESS you are a mistress of a Republican Congressman. He'll make sure you have the right to a safe clean abortion!

Remember, he can't afford to miss any Sundays in church!

11. It’s all somewhat irrelevant…..
Whomever is nominated, will quickly move from committee to floor where a filibuster will be just slightly more difficult come next year….44 dems & 1 indy need to stick together like never before…it ain’t gonna be easy….

12. We won't have Reid on our side for this one, or Ben Nelson (D-NE)
and there are probably a couple more dems who will vote cloture for one reason or another.

We'll be relying on defections from the republican team to support the filibusters. Chaffee, Snowe, and Collins will be key players.
