As complaints of ethics loom, incumbent meets new constituency

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, increasing his local visibility in the face of ethics complaints and with an election just 11 days away, said in Houston on Friday that Democrats are vilifying him.


"I've never had a campaign where the entire nation has tried to destroy my name," DeLay said. "They are going after me in the most personal and vindictive way. It's gutter politics."

On Thursday DeLay was subpoenaed to testify in a lawsuit alleging he abused his power during last year's fight over congressional redistricting. His attorney filed a motion Friday asking a state district judge in Austin to throw out the subpoena, and DeLay said the deposition will not move forward.

"This is trying to criminalize politics," he said.
