Fox News Pulls Item With Fake Kerry Quotes
Edited on Fri Oct-01-04 08:55 PM by NNN0LHI

WASHINGTON (AP) - Fox News apologized Friday for posting phony quotes from Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry on its Web site.

Carl Cameron, a Fox reporter who covers the Kerry campaign, wrote an item that looked like a news story with made-up Kerry quotes, said Paul Schur, a Fox spokesman. The item was not intended to be posted on the site.

"Carl made a stupid mistake which he regrets," Schur said Friday night. "And he has been reprimanded for his lapse in judgment. It was a poor attempt at humor."

The phony item posted early Friday read in part:

11. I saw the article, and I think I know what it was.
Edited on Fri Oct-01-04 09:09 PM by americanstranger
The entire article was written - except for the quotes, which were completely made up.

My guess is that Cameron wrote the article and was going to wait for Kerry's campaign appearance to get quotes to put into the story, and the fake quotes were placeholders for where Kerry's real quotes would go. I'm guessing he filed the story without remembering he hadn't gotten any real quotes (or got the real quotes and didn't update the story but filed it anyway), and it ended up on the web site.

Having said that, the quotes were just stupid and not even funny. Cameron should be made to ride in the baggage hold of Kerry's plane - just for being an idiot.

Josh Marshall was on this all day today.

42. In my letter to Fox I told them to replace him
A real professional uses things like "ZZZ" or "Kerryquote" so that a search engine can easily find them. I do this when I need to temporarily rename a folder or a file. A coworker got fired years ago when he thought he was being funny with a customer's hard drive. The placeholders he used were dirty words and he forgot to remove them. The customer had enough computer savvy to notice this and call the manager.

Real professionals proofread.

Carl Cameron is an amateur and has shown it to the whole world.

100. Someone in the campaign should bring it up
I think Carville would be good.

The repugs whined about CBS's Bob Schieffer moderating one of the debates. I don't think they believed they could get Schieffer booted; they wanted to energize their base.

We could mention how this CLEARLY shows Carl Cameron's negative attitude towards Kerry. Let's make sure to get out the Fox-hater vote!

Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 09:49 AM by Mr_Spock
That smug little weasel was so open about his Bush campaigning in the Outfoxed video as to be without any credibility.

NOW this weasel shows his hatred/bias/bigotry of the other side with this stunt. This kind of weasel cannot be allowed to be on the air and we need to do whatever it takes to get him removed from his position.

I'll write to Fox as well, but a petition with a million names on it would carry more weight. This guy must go.

Edit - I did send a nice letter to Faux addresses above, but I think we need to do more. Though anybody who doesn't send them a letter now can't complain about Faux.

From Fox: "We regret the error, which occurred because of fatigue and bad judgment, not malice."

From the "not malice" article: "The item also quoted Kerry as saying of himself and President Bush: 'I'm metrosexual - he's a cowboy.'"

Now, be sure to pay your cable bill so Fox can continue to bring more "not malice" "news" into your home.

... it doesn't pass my smell test, nor does it Josh Marshall’s:
"Our day-in, day-out coverage by Carl Cameron has been extremely fair to Kerry, and the Kerry campaign has recognized this," [Brit Hume] says.

"We did a lot on the Swift Boat Veterans. We thought it was a totally legitimate story and found it an appalling lapse by many of our competitive news organizations that were treating that story like it was cancerous." But even there, Hume says, "we were abundantly fair to John Kerry's side."
Please... someone... cue the laff track!

But wait! Check out this ditty from MediaMatters.org:
FOX News Channel chief political correspondent Carl Cameron echoed false Republican charges that Senator John Kerry's recent statements explaining his position on the war in Iraq contradict his earlier statements. On September 21, Cameron played and read a series of clips and quotations of Kerry -- many of them also listed in Bush-Cheney '04 and Republican National Committee (RNC) campaign materials attacking Kerry -- and suggested they were contradictory. In fact, they are consistent.
"Extremely fair. Yeah, right, Brit.

83. Now Fox has posted an "interview" with "Communists for Kerry"!
From Fox..............

"We're trying to get Comrade Kerry elected and get that capitalist enabler George Bush out of office," said 17-year-old Komoselutes Rob of Communists for Kerry.

"Even though he, too, is a capitalist, he supports my socialist values more than President Bush," Rob said, before assuring FOXNews.com that his organization was not a parody group. When asked his thoughts on Washington's policy toward Communist holdout North Korea, Rob said: "The North Koreans are my comrades to a point, and I'm sure they support Comrade Kerry, too."

It is unclear whether the Kerry campaign has welcomed the Communists' endorsement."

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,134268,00.html

Fox will interview any nutjob if they think it can harm Kerry.

48. Something isn't quite right about Fox's excuse....
Am I right to concur that the fake quotes were put in as "place holders" and were suppose to be replaced with real quotes after Kerry made his speech yesterday?

Here's the problem, if you click on this link, you can see the actual screen capture of the fake story yanked off of faux:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x945204

If you scroll down, there's the fake Kerry quote about how he's a metrosexual and Bush is a cowboy, but the next paragraph isn't a fake quote, but the actual definition of what a metrosexual is. Does Cameron also insert fake non-quote paragraphs for no reason? What kind of journalist would do that? Was he really expecting to use the metrosexual paragraph?

50. FU(X) Commentary
They are NOT a news source. Nothing they report is "new.'

FU(X): We are up Bush's rear. We are scared to death of Kerry ( and the truth.) All Bullshit-All the time.

My cousin who works for them is e-mailing everyone telling them to vote for Kerry, so those lower on the chain aren't fooled. Perhaps someone from the inside will bring their house of cards down.

52. whether we like it or not, they're considered a major news network
I agree that they report on nothing more than propoganda, but the problem with dismissing them is that they are rarely held accountable when they screw up royally.

Cameron is the chief political correspondent for the network. He wrote a fake story using fake, homophobic quotes about Kerry, and the network reported it. This is unacceptable.

Millions of people get their news from Faux so we can either dismiss the network and go on allowing them to do stuff like this, or we can finally hold their feet to the fire and hit hard enough to make them realize they have a responsibility to tell the truth. The first step is to demand that Cameron gets fired.

49. So, where's the outrage over this?
All of the media pundits wanted Dan Rather's head on a platter and proclaimed that CBS's credibility is down the toilet.

Granted, this is a different type of medium, but it's attached to Fox's news division and is to be interpreted as factual to those entering their website.

Or, does the country already know that Fox is just basically a mouthpiece for Bush/Cheney and shrug it off?

61. The phony item posted early Friday read in part: ---For those that didn't
go to the link--

"Rallying supporters in Tampa Friday Kerry played up his performance in Thursday night's debate in which many observers agreed the Massachusetts senator outperformed the president.

"'Didn't my nails and cuticles look great? What a good debate!' Kerry said Friday.

"With the foreign-policy debate in the history books, Kerry hopes to keep the pressure on and the sense of traction going.

"Aides say he will step up attacks on the president in the next few days, and pivot somewhat to the domestic agenda, with a focus on women and abortion rights."
'It's about the Supreme Court. Women should like me! I do manicures,' Kerry said."

The item also quoted Kerry as saying of himself and President Bush: "I'm metrosexual - he's a cowboy."

These are not cause to sue for slander.

72. Here's my letter to Fox...........
Wasn't it just last week that Fox News was tirelessly flogging CBS for its airing of a story with a document critical of George Bush that may have been a forgery? What a journalistic travesty, Fox claimed, its sanctimony dripping with barely concealed glee.

Well, it seems to me that having a political reporter create false quotes designed to smear is far worse. At least the "forged" documents aired by CBS contained truthful information. Not so with Fox's political correspondent Carl Cameron. He just materialized the Kerry quotes out of thin air. And at least CBS received the documents from an outside source. Not so with Fox. Your reporter simply generated falsehoods from within. No need for that messy outsourcing that brought down CBS.

I'd like to say that the ironies presented here are delicious, but I just can't get the bad taste out my mouth. If Fox had any journalistic integrity whatsoever it would have never assigned Cameron to cover Kerry in the first place given the fact that Carl's wife is on the Bush campaign. If Fox wants to continue to pretend that it has any integrity left remaining, it will remove Cameron from the Kerry campaign, and assign another of its "unbiased" correspondents (or at least one that hasn't been outed yet, quite so blatantly).

But, truth and fairness never were Fox's strong suits, were they?

When Jason Blair printed false stories, 'The New York Times'

I certainly hope 'Fox News' intends to implement a similar
action in response to an intentional abuse of journalistic
professionalism by Carl Cameron.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,134268,00.html

<snip>

Of course, there were some Kerry supporters in attendance who had no doubts whatever about their candidate.

It is unclear whether the Kerry campaign has welcomed the Communists' endorsement.

"Communists for Kerry" is a campaign of the Hellgate Republican Club, a tax exempt non-partisan public advocacy "527" organization that exists for the purpose of;

Our members help elect candidates who support economic growth through Entrepreneurship, limited government and lower taxes. Communists For Kerry is separate and distinct from the Communist party of America and any of its organization. None of it's members are members of any communist organizations.

91. found this just now on the Faux website
Editor’s Note:

In an version of this article that was published earlier, the Communists for Kerry were portrayed as a group that was supporting John Kerry for president. FOXNews.com’s reporter asked the group’s representative several times whether the group was legitimate and supporting the Democratic candidate, and the spokesman insisted that it was.

Terri's Note to Editor:

FOXNews.com's reporter might have done the tiniest amount of background research on the group's origin before taking their word. But wait, I guess that would constitute journalism, wouldn't it?
