Iraqi roads crushed by US military
By Ahmed Janabi

Tuesday 28 September 2004, 9:42 Makka Time, 6:42 GMT

Iraq's roads are being regularly destroyed by US-led forces' tanks, armoured vehicles and military operations.

The once first-rate network now lies in tatters with drivers of military vehicles destroying central reservations, crashing into barriers and crushing pavements.

With the widespread damage, many Iraqis wonder who will pick up the repair bill for the infrastructure which cost the Iraqi state millions of dollars to develop.

"Drivers of US occupation tanks have no respect for Iraq as an entity; they trash everything on their way," says Hana Khalid, a retired Iraqi teacher.

"It is a very common scene in Baghdad that a tank destroys a pavement in order to make a U-turn."

1. An 18 year old computer geek driving a Tank
A real Tank--

Not all soldiers are idiots-- but I'll bet there a lot of them who love to test the durabilty of Uncle Sugar's equiptment.

3. Something else damaging & expensive that they "forgot" about
Oh, and let's not forget - busted up road surfaces make it easier to (you guessed it) dig holes for the planting of bombs. Duh.

6. Hey that means more contracts for Hallliburton, doesn't it?
Iraq was a beautiful country, very advanced until Desrt Storm and Shock & Awe. Destroying them to save them.

9. Just like Vietnam.
We used to deliberately run over new sections of carefully constructed rice patty dikes with tanks and acavs every time we went out on a daily field op. Why a new section each time? To avoid land mines. But the damage to the century old dike system must have been enormous. And the insult to the Vietnamese, incalculable. We never give a rats ass about what the locals think of us. All the stuff about "trying to win hearts and minds" is specious bullshit for the folks back home. The men at the top of the military machine don't believe in anything but brute intimidation. They don't have a clue.
