Edwards talks Canadian trash during Michigan campaign stop

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards talked a little trash during a Michigan campaign stop Monday night.

Several thousand people turned out to see and hear the U.S. senator from North Carolina at a rally held at a downtown park. An off-and-on drizzle helped cool the crowd on a warm, muggy night in this southwestern Michigan city.

Amid chants of "two more months" and "hope is on the way," Edwards covered a wide range of issues during his 30-minute appearance, including auto-industry jobs, health care and the flow of Canadian trash into Michigan.

He combined two Canada-related topics in a zinger hurled at President Bush, who made a campaign stop in Kalamazoo on May 3. "He's perfectly happy to let garbage into this country from Canada, right?" Edwards said. "How about we let in prescription drugs from Canada?"

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., a supporter of importing less-costly Canadian prescription drugs, joined Edwards onstage at Bronson Park. She and U.S. Rep. John Dingell of Dearborn planned to be in Detroit on Tuesday to introduce a plan by Edwards and Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry to end the importation of Canadian trash into Michigan.

Well, that's it, I'm not voting Kerry/Edwards! Wait....I am Canadian and I agree with him, the US shouldn't accept our garbage, it is our problem and as to Canadian drugs, well, I hope Edwards WHEN he is VP he will push to get affordable drugs in the US so no one has to go to Canada or Mexico for their perscriptions.

The speech was fuckin' stellar. Flawlessly executed, and John Edwards is very personable. When it started to rain, he glanced up and said something along the lines of "It looks like rain... I'll stay if you guys do."
